    How does Smart DNS work?

Simply changing the DNS servers on your device, you are able to unblock most popular US and UK streaming sites. In order to bring you the best quality of all streaming media to all your devices, Smart DNS servers automatically re-route your data. Whenever you will access US or UK websites, our servers will identify and “understand” your actions and will act accordingly

I guess basically what it does is this:

    • Changing the recursive DNS on your device / network to their DNS servers
    • Answer your DNS requests as normal, until it hits the site that are restrictive
    • SmartyDNS then return you the IP address of their proxy server. So when your browser connects to hulu.com it actually connects to their proxy server, which then connect to hulu.com from an unrestricted IP range.

So no VPN software is needed on your end. Some issues:

    • SmartyDNS basically keeps all your DNS requests so it knows all the sites you are visiting. I guess it's some piece of data that they can sell later on. Some ISP is already doing this in US I heard.
    • Someone owning your DNS means it's easy for them to issue a MITM attack against you on sites that don't have SSL yet. They can reroute all that traffic through the proxy and collect all the packets since there's no encryption.

Now. Should you trust your DNS with your ISP? Maybe, at least with an Australian company they are sort of regulated. Should you trust your DNS with some guy in Moldova? Hmmm. No thanks.

  • If you are using this on something like an Apple TV, you can just change the DNS on there. Not too much to worry about if all you are doing with your ATV is viewing streaming content.
