  • I was looking at these today mainly to record my bike rides using the gps. Seems to have good enough specs for the price.

  • Shame about the Gingerbread.

    • ICS update available from Huawei works OK.

      • How would you update it?

        • Download the update and follow the instructions, it's pretty straightforward. I bought one of these a while back, decent phone for the price. You can buy an unlock from e-bay for $8.

Vodaphone use 850mhz so works well with Telstra, not so well with Optus.

It appears that most people are able to unlock this phone via vodafone website for FREE. If that fails Bag_Man should be able to unlock this phone for approx $5.00

Huawei Ascend G300+ works equally well on 850 & 900 mhz. (G300 works only on 850mhz).

          Copied from DSE website:

The reason why you'd choose this (ie G300+) over the standard G300 is that it supports Telstra's 850MHz as well as Optus' 900MHz and 2100MHz whereas the standard G300 only supports 850MHz and 2100MHz. So in theory, if you use an Optus SIM (assuming the phone is now unlocked) you'll get better coverage with the G300+ in comparison to the G300.

  • Whirlpool forum currently down.

Do you have a link to this deal at the Vodafone store? I searched on there and found none.

    • I saw it in their store for $99 today and then checked their website (prior to posting this deal) and it was definitely there

      • I bought one today from the Perth CBD store for $99. Upgraded the phone to ICS from the instructions posted on the whirlpool forums (very easy).

Now all I have to do is unlock the phone with a non vodafone SIM and I'm all good to use it when I fly out next week!

        Thanks a lot OP!

  • I bought one from Target from the last deal (was $99 also). It worked for a day but now it doesn't turn on (lights flash a few times on the buttons and then nothing). Huawei haven't been a bit helpful through emails or over the phone. If you get this phone to work, awesome! It looks great for the price! Though, if you have a defect like I have, don't expect much help.

you should have taken it back to Target for a replacement/refund.

have a look at the info in the link or do a search on consumer rights
      http://www.accc.gov.au/consumers/consumer-rights-guarantees/…

if it is defective after purchase or a short time thereafter they cant palm you off to the manufacturer or distributor, although a good deal of places try.

If you're lucky you'll also find these at certain Officeworks.

    • And price match, waving a certain ING card.

  • Also bought one from Target in their recent sale.

Brilliant phone for the price, and easily upgradable to Android 4 (ICS) from the Huawei Oz website.

Just about everyone has reported that if the phone was locked to Vodafone, it was either unlocked when they bought it, or an unlock application via the Vodafone website was met within 3 or 4 working days. The latter was applicable in my case.

G300+ is a great phone if you need the 900Mhz band for Optus.

Otherwise the Huawei Y300 for $129 at Telstra or DSE is technically better for only $30 more:
    http://dicksmith.com.au/product/EM5202/telstra-huawei-ascend…

It has a dual-core CPU (G300+ has single core) and comes with JB 4.1.2 (G300+ comes with GB, but is ICS 4.0.3 upgradable). Though won't get a Telstra unlock for free for the Y300. Will need bagman's services or try a self-unlock by referring to modaco.com info.

    • +1 for Y300 it's a great phone for the price.

  • Just asked for a better price on this phone at DS store and after telling me that there is no better price on prepaid phones, the sales-person checked on their system anyway and vola, just under 10% discount. So i paid $91.
