Best deal on a Macbook Air 13"?

Hi guys, I'm currently shopping around for the new 2013 MBA and found that David Jones is doing a 10% off sale with the WELCOME10 code (if I'm missing a better deal please let me know!)

Before I make the purchase, I was thinking about a couple of things which I hope the seasoned veterans here on ozbargain would be able to help me with:

  • I was planning on invoicing this against my company tax, as the rule goes that depreciable assets under 6k or so can be written off immediately

  • I was also thinking of using the Tourist Refund Scheme GST refund as well, because I'm travelling overseas in about 15 days.

Does anyone else have any experience with bundling the TRS with other government based schemes? All the discounts taken together feel too good to be true…

On another note, why is it that out of all stores, only David Jones seem to be stocking the new Macbook Airs? As a first time buyer I'm rather confused - I couldn't buy one from JB or Dick Smith even if I wanted to!

Thanks a lot in advance!

Well, I guess that from a legal point of view you can't claim this MacBook as an expense and then get GST back through the tourist refund. When you are claiming GST that way, it supposed that the item will leave the country and will not come back. Otherwise you have to pay GST on arrival. You can't claim something as an expense if it is not going to be used by you for business purposes in Australia.

On the other hand, they will never know that you have returned GST on the MacBook. It is highly unlikely that David Jones will put a serial number on the invoice and someone will be ever able to track that the Macbook was used to claim a business expense and then the GST refund.

out of stock and WELCOME10 doesn't work

Presumably the other places are trying to get rid of old stock before they sell.

If WELCOME10 isn't working I am pretty sure David Jones would price match Zerothree http://www.zerothree.com.au/ who I think have a bricks and mortar store in Vic. You could of course buy direct from ZeroThree (they do free postage Aus wide) but I wouldn't be so sure with sending a laptop uninsured interstate…

  • Thanks for your help guys, much appreciated.

    • If you try a pricematch let us know how it goes. Thinking of trying it out myself.
