    This is pretty expensive soap!
Last time, I got the detol foaming hand wash for $2.

I think I'd rather pay less, and spend the 2 seconds to push the pump.

Also, has anyone had problems with the dispenser? I have a friend whose dispenser spontaneously dispenses soap.

    • They don't last long. I know of about 6 of 6 that have failed. Either I know of several unfortunate people (including myself), or it's just coincidence.

      I wouldn't buy another - even at $2

    • Also, has anyone had problems with the dispenser? I have a friend whose dispenser spontaneously dispenses soap.

We had one do that and eventually tossed it.

The last time this deal came up (about 12 months ago) we got 2 as spares (we have 3) and they're both still in their packaging as nothing has gone wrong with the ones we have.

I can't stand soggy lumps of soap, and when hubby tends to come in with grease on his hands, I'm not having to clean it off the top of a pump bottle. The automatic doohicky is also very handy to have in the kitchen if your hands are covered in food. My only complaint is that they don't make them with non-antibacterial soaps. We refill with regular liquid handwash (simply lever off the lid.)

    • Also, has anyone had problems with the dispenser? I have a friend whose dispenser spontaneously dispenses soap.

Mine did that as well and I thought it was running low on battery. Turns out that it was a dirty sensor. You can clean it by just giving it a wipe with a damp cloth. The sensor is in front (or behind - can't remember exactly) of the soap outlet.

horrible product. doesn't work all the time

some of these washers contain Triclosan. Harmful to the environment and your hands. The cheap Five Stars brand sold by Aldi has it as well as many others.

    • +1

For anyone wondering, this particular version (Refreshing Grapefruit) doesn't have triclosan/triclocarban. Not sure about the other varieties as I haven't had to buy the refills yet.

Though if you're worried about the other ingredients, you can't go wrong with soap and water :)

    • Triclosan is harmful for your hands but safe for your mouth? I doubt it. http://www.colgate.com/app/ColgateTotal/US/EN/Triclosan-FAQ.…

Got three from Coles a few months back for ~$5 each. T'was an expired promo for Ice Age 4 and depicts the movie graphics on the dispenser. I have to say that it works quite well for me - does what it's meant to do and no issues. Using all three in the kitchen and two bathrooms. The refill costs ~$5 by itself but you can use any hand soap refill if you pry the original refill open (carefully) once it's finished.

I think this is a fairly good deal as original price in Coles is ~$20 each.

    • Spot on. We're very happy with ours, and have refilled them several times with other liquid soap bought on special.

    • it's easier to refill using a squeezable bottle, eg tomato sauce bottle or hair dye bottle.

For anyone interested in seeing how it works:

May i quote from the comments : "The makers of the 'Dettol super safe hands-free' soap dispenser conveniently gloss over the fact that whenever you touched your old-fashioned germ-smothered dispenser you normally wash your hands with soap straight afterwards. Yay another great way for neurotic shopers to be duped into to spending money on stuff that will end up as land-fill."

But it can also moderate how much you need - which can be a good or bad thing. My kids often press the regular pump and say "oh, that's not enough" and press it again.
With the Dettol system (which doesn't work reliably), it moderates how much you get each time.
Necessary? Most probably not. You also need batteries with the Dettol dispensers.

      • +7

So what stops them from saying "that's not enough" and putting them hands under the Dettol dispenser several times?
Parents are the best behaviour moderators rather than the dispenser ;-)

"Pay by card to save 1 cent". Too funny!

A true OBer, paying by card to save 1 cent.

    • +1

An uber-OBer would buy multiple dispensers, pay cash to get the bigger rounding down saving, put the extra units in the cupboard knowing that they will probably never use then, and still have that all-day glowing satisfaction that they beat the system

  • Sorry guys, but why do you need a touch-free dispenser? If you're worried about germs, I'm sure you'd be better off with a touch-free tap. If the soap is any good, you're bound to wash off any bacteria that's passed on from the dispenser to your hand anyway!

    • +5

I like using the touch free dispenser when my hands are buttery/oily when im baking or marinating things… Saves me from touching the tap or a soap pump and leaving more of a mess to clean.

    • Years ago, "scientists" did a study that showed that simply rinsing your hands thoroughly after washing has more impact of bacteria removal than the type of soap you use.

It's all largely moot anyway, because most of your house is covered with an "aerosol spray of tiny tainted water droplets… of fecal matter", with the toilet at ground zero :(

      http://dsc.discovery.com/tv-shows/mythbusters/mythbusters-da…

    • It's the way you wash your hands rather than the type of soap that has the most impact on bacteria left on hands. If you don't wash your hands properly, the bacteria picked up from the soap dispenser could be left on your hands after washing.

  • +1

Why do you need this anyway? Soap and water are much cheaper and do the same job.

  • +2

not sure why the mrs bought one of these, one night it decided to switch on and dump its guys all over the place.

I wouldnt use one if they were giving these away

  • +2

pro tip with these things - if you decide you don't want to pay stupid amounts for the special refills cut a hole in the top of the soap bottle and refill with shower gel. If you decide to cut a hole in the top and refill with shower gel make sure its not the type with ex-foliating micro beads, it no likey.

    • … or just lever off the top. It's not difficult to locate the lugs that hold it on.

  • +1

I got mine for $5 each when it was on clearance at Woolworths because of that ice age promotion, the bottles are refillable, I just refill it with morning fresh.

  • I've never had a problem with the two I bought. Modded the soap container to be refillable too so I can use whatever soap I want now.

  • Sorry not a deal because I have bought these at 10 for 2 at chemist warehouse

  • They are good but the first one I had.. The battery went low and started pumping out the soap all over the sink… At $5 a refill ouch.. After a battery change it has never done it since.. !!!

  • Being germ free also weakens your immune system

  • How much soap does this dispense? Does it pump out way too much so that you consume the refills faster than you really need to?
