4G MiFi or cheap 4G mobile for data tethering?

My current Mobile WiFi (MiFi) is about to expire and I have the choice to either buy another recharge voucher or look at new hardware + carrier. I am currently using a Virgin Mobile ZTE MF62 and am on the tail end of a 365-day expiry 18gb voucher ($199 - yes it is expensive but for my low volume usage, ADSL2+ at home, this is really for when I am commuting and when I am travelling). I hope to keep a MiFi device as it allows me to keep my cheap ($19) BYO plan ($450 credit + 250mb data) for my phone and prevents me burning through my battery when I surf on the run with my tablet.

Any ideas? Should I get a cheap 4G handset and a Kogan sim? Get a 4G Mifi unit? stay put?

    • Thank you for your PM I am located in Sydney, but I travel within a radious of a 3hr drive a fair bit, I am looking to change not so much as to save money (regardless of who I am with going down the pre-paid route is going to be expensive) but to possibly get 4G for when I am in available service areas and get better coverage (if possible).
