Best electricity company in victoria?

Hi Guys

Appreciate all smart and money conscious users on this website (thought that sounded better than tight-arse as my friends like to call me)

Quick question for you guys. My wife decided to answer the door (oh no!!) and agree to sign up to Simply Energy for our electricity needs. We were previously with LUMO prior to this and every year the electricity bills does seem to increase. Wanted your opinions on which company is better for electricity and what I should look out for. There's a lot of documents to look over as well as peak/off peak usage so would appreciate if you guys can help me out. Did she make the right decision?

Thanks

    • I'm with Red Energy and referred a friend, both she and I got a voucher, the rates seem to be OK(ish) too

  • Check whose your provider first from here : http://www.vesi.com.au/, then compare the rates around.

For my area, lumo seems to be the one.

  • You can't really say "seemed to increase" without specifics. How much electricity did you use per day on each of your last 4 bills? That will help people give advice.

Yes, pricing is going up, but if your usage went up then that would make your bills higher too.

no-one has yet been able to beat the price of Momentum (in a Jermena area). Not only are their rates lowest, their daily charge is lowest and the carbon tax is deducted as it comes from renewable energy. Their prices did not go up this year, but will change in Jan 2014

  • I went with red energy. They were the cheapest option for me, plus an additional discount if I pay on time.

If you want to sign up, I can send you a request, and we both get a $50 coles/myer gift card.

If she signed up only a few days ago, you should find that there is a 'cooling off period' so you can get out without any penalty. Personally I changed to Momentum at the start of the year and have not looked back. No idea how the rates compare with Simply Energy though. As others have stated, check out the comparison sites, or alternatively fire up Excel and put in your usage from old bills and then see how much those would have been if you went to x/y or z….

  • I had a really good experience with Origin Energy. I had a call from the Origin Retention team and they offered me a choice of either a 28% total bill or 38% usage only discount on electricity or a 16% total bill or 26% usage only gas discount. it was a shame that i had to leave the company in the first place to get these offered to me but the guy said that if i can help out anyone to pass his number along. it was good because i signed up with Red Energy and he covered their $95 termination fee on both my gas and electricity account, and gave me $100 credit on each account on top of covering the termination fee, so i was basically in credit nearly $400. the number that was given is 03 8635 3492. that goes straight to the retention team.
