AirAsia processing fee

Hi, I couldnt find this on a quick search so thought id ask. So Im looking at buying a one way flight from Osaka to Sydney from Airasia. They charge a processing fee if you pay with credit card in JPY or AUD.

I noticed if i select to pay in JPY instead of AUD that its cheaper by ~25AUD (if i use Citibank Plus Debit), also i noticed they waive the processing fee if i pay in MYR. Has any1 tried this before? Is it safe?

TIA

EDIT: Is there any problem with booking my inbound and outbound flights to japan separately? ive found it to be cheaper by a few bucks. I remember some1 saying something similar about possibly getting rejected by customs if they think u dont have a return ticket?

  • Yeah the processing fee is just a BULLSHIT way of getting around ACCC's (alleged) crackdown on excessive Ccard fees. (Joke of a system if you ask me)

There shouldn't be any issues paying in a foreign currency if it works out better for you (and the website is allowing despite your Aus address). Anyway to beat the bs system is a massive tick on this forum.

I'm guessing it's because they've done the research and found out Malaysians can't afford or wouldn't pay or some local legislation regarding exorbitant fees.

  • ahh i actually messed up, still have to pay the fee for MYR, the site just automatically went to the option that doesnt require a fee. but its still cheaper than AUD

    Thanks

  • I have noticed that AirAsia uses an exchange rate that goes in their favour, & worse than the current rates. Let us know how you go. Once you have included card fees for being in a foreign currency.

  • I think everyone uses an exchange rate that works in their favour. The best thing I've done is getting a 28 degree mcard thanks to OZB of course.

  • I don't know what I would do without my 28 Degrees card…

  • I am obsessive about using my Citibank Emirates Card to ensure that I have free travel insurance. (a minor byproduct is the Emirates miles) I am fairly sure that I only need to pay outwards travel to my final destination, and could book the return leg seperately (which I often do with AirAsia anyway giving me more flexibility because booking deals 10 months in advance is risky business. Can change/cancel half the trip without losing the whole return ticket). So therefore I could book the leg coming back on a 28 degree mcard. But the thought of having to apply for another card is daunting to save a small %. I really hate the huge process fees of Air Asia too.

    • I rang Zurich and they say that with Citibank travel insurance cover there is NO minimum spend. Also no age limit. But you must be paying for the outwards flight, and the return flight with the card. That has stuffed me up with my AirAsia bookings because I booked the coming back leg separately with my citibank debit card. Now I have to buy insurance. Damn! outsmarted myself

  • With most credit cards (check yours) you only need to spend a very small amount on travel to get Travel Insurance.
eg On ANZ platinum, I can PREPAY $250 (typically hotel or even part of it or may be even rental car) to get full coverage for the entire duration you are oseas. You can also travel to multiple destinations etc with no issues as long as you don't return to your home address, at which point it resets and you need to spend another $250 to restart etc

As always check with your provider first.

  • link your citibank plus card to paypal and pay using paypal

There will be no processing fee if you opt to pay using paypal.

    • Will citibank card still give free travel insurance if I buy the airline ticket via paypal linked with it??

      • You'd have to ask them on that.

  • +1

just called commbank and they confirmed that i will still be covered for complementary insurance if i go through paypal. hope this helps someone who digs up on this!

  • When I went t pay w' Paypal, there was still the added fee.
