Heading to Malay/Singa. Is it worth buying a Camera Lens there? Lens compatibility issues between Compact Lens System and DSLR

Hi Ozbargainers!

I'm heading to Malaysia/Singapore in a couple of weeks and was wondering if Camera Lenses were cheaper to buy online here or to buy from there. Also Benefits and Warnings I should take (Price, Warranty, etc.). I currently have the Compact Lens System Camera Samsung NX200 and I was keen on getting a new lens, eg vintage lens, wide angle or macro. Can I actually get a DSLR Lens for it? Are Adaptors difficult to find? Because lenses are quite limited within the Samsung NX Range and also not easily available in stores.

Thanks!

  • Prices are either the same or slightly cheaper than in Australia.

If you want cheap camera gear just buy it online from Hong Kong sellers - that's the cheapest place. Of course, warranty issues are a problem, but that's another story.

For the NX range though, you'll find it hard to find a place that sells the lenses/accessories, since it's not a very popular camera.

  • Hi there,

The price of camera is much cheaper in Singapore and Malaysia . Bro in law just bought Olympus pen epl3 that include the additional lense kit,case,8gb memory card, extra battery for S$500 in Singapore . He walked around sim lim tower to compare prices .I would say know your price before you bargain with them and compare around shops to get the best bargain. If they refuse to back down on the price, try to talk them into getting u some free accessories. Besides that u can also claim the Gst back like what u do here .

I m not very good with photography,so I can't tell if the lenses that u buy there will be comparable or not.

In terms of warranty,he was told Olympus has international warranty.i am not sure about Samsung . I think all this depends on the brand.

  • Its sim lim square and not sim lim tower although both are just opposite each other. Always read up on the prices and stuff that you want before purchasing.. peeps on the first 2 floor love to pick on tourists. The higher levels do not have such problems. A safer but slightly more exp place is funan shopping mall.

  • I was in SG last year and went to that Tower that has all the camera shops - I paid more for my Sony 16-50 2.8 than I would have in Australia (and definitely more than from DWI in Hong Kong) but it was the last day of a 2 week holiday and we were staying at Marina Bay Sands for one night just so we could swim in the rooftop pool!

I'd broken my regular lens against a temple wall in Angkor Wat the week before, and the only other lens I had with me was the 70-200 2.8 which was never going to be able to take wide shots of the skyline etc…

Had to bite the bullet on that one - but SG is not cheap
