Not really sure about current deal, but I usually deal with VentraIP which have $19.95/2 Years everyday price on .com.au, and occasional $17.95/2 Years sales (in May & April for example).

      +1 for VentraIP

    • Ventra is one of the better ones with regular sales low prices and feature rich, a lot of of other registrars advertise their .com.au domains as per X amount per year and hide away the 2 year term in the conditions along with depriving you of basic features.

  • $12…but the registrar in question is renowned for poor responsiveness to customer queries.

It's even cheaper if you take hosting…Plenty of reviews out there..you'll go crazy mad trying to get things to work.

They are also in the (very) bad books (ie a formal "please explain") with the AU domain authority for a number of reasons, including lack of tranparency that you are not actually dealing with an Australian business but one domiciled in the Middle East.

I know it's "crazy" but you'll find them if you look.

These reviews gave me a chuckle. http://www.hostingkids.com/host/crazydomains.com.au/

So the message is..cheap is not always worth it.
For service though, and a more realistic price of around $19, I can't fault NetOrigin.

Note that Crazy Domain it's quoting $12 Per Year however .au domains are generally in 2 year terms. So it's still more expensive than ventraip's $19.95/2 years.

      • oh thanks for picking that up.

Neatly hidden down the side ".au min 2yr term".

Jumba (Uber) also once had sharp domain pricing but then significantly increased pricing hoping no one would notice.

      • And the dodgey buggers aren't registered for GST.

  • I use onlydomains.com they provide a variety of services and have been consistently cheaper for a variety of domains over the last 2 years. Current annual cost for a .com.au domain is $9.95 per year

As a kind-of-related side-note you may find cheap registrars have poor management options for DNS, email etc. so here's my recommendations for the best free or almost-free providers of the most common services you might want on your new domain:

    1. I can't recommend CloudFlare enough as a (free) DNS host. Great interface and bind zone file support too, not to mention their value-add services such as their CDN acceleration etc (which you don't have to use).

    2. If you're running a non-commercial site then startSSL will give you completely free SSL certs (valid for one year, no wildcards). Bit of a clunky interface but gets the job done.

    3. You can still host GMail etc (Google Apps) on your own domain for free providing you only need a single user. Google Apps is not now free for multiple users unfortunately but you can use MS Outlook for upto 500 users (I think) for free. Either option will beat most domain registrar email offerings.

    4. If you just want a static low-traffic site then that, too, can be hosted for free at Google (not just the crappy Google sites, but instead using Google AppEngine as a real web host). Note that your free SSL cert can't be used here though…

What with all that you can get a pretty sweet setup in place for next to nothing (well for actually nothing excluding the domain registration).

Shoot me a message if you need any info on any of this but it should be all Google-able.
