World Cup 2014 - which airline to get there

So … Well .. Is there anyone going?
Even July pricing is n/a, i had a quick search and so far, qantas and emirates fly from
melbourne to Rio (3 stop each).

Do you think if possible, i can board a cheap flight to Asia (singapore, malaysia), and then fly to Rio from there (hopefully cheaper fare?)
Will try to combine the trip with Lima as well. Wanna see the ancient city.

  • Yeah mate I'm going. Will post up (if I remember) if I find any good deals.

  • But I think going from Singapore won't be cheaper. I'm going to the World Cup with my Singaporean mate and he said it's $2,000 plus to get from Singapore to Rio return.

  • Brazilians would tell you to go kill yourself, most of them don't even want the World Cup to happen.

  • Kid, not.

a quick google search would reveal more media coverage, but that's what the media portraits. I'm not sure if things on the ground would be as grim as they show us

  • If you look at timezones, Rio is at UTC-3. We are at UTC+10. That means it's almost the other side of the globe. However if you go via Asia, you would have normally go through Europe, since via Africa isn't a heavily used route, which means going to the northern hemisphere and a longer route. So it will be more plane km and I would not be surprised if costs more than going via Buenos Aires or Santiago de Chile. On the other hand, Asia-Europe is a competitive route. On the other hand again, July is peak season for that route.

  • Qantas have got a deal ending today SYD-SCL $1300 one way — dirt cheap compared to their normal fare of >2000. from Santiago, you can grab a LAN pass to fly anywhere in Sth America for discounted rates.

Other options are via the Middle East or through LAX, but going through Santiago is the most direct and quickest option.

  • Thanks guys, So far I know, the civil unrest is happening in RIO only in finance business areas, and after 5PM (at a specifically scheduled time). I am not gonna stay in RIO (Centro), so hopefully (fingers crossed) should be fine.

  • Bump!

Most July pricing is still N/A but I expect that to change soon enough. Please post any good deals you see.

Personally my plan is to land in any given South American country (the one with the cheapest flights) around late May and travel the continent before making my way to Brazil for the start of the WC.
