Teachers health insurance any good?

Hi I'm currently single with nib hospital cover and extras but have been advised by few friends to join teachers health insurance(a family member is in department of education for few more months), not sure if its a good move to switch over to teachers insurance. Please advise, what are the +ve (other than they are not for profit organization) and -ve. Thanks in advance.

We've been with tfh for many years. I switched from medibnak and found tfh offering exceptional benefits especially when it comes to extras. Fortunately, no hospital cover experience so far.

    • Thanks so much for input, I did compare it to Nib and seems that teachers insurance is around $15 extra a week? Can you point out some of the +be of teachers insurance.

      Thanks again

  • Compare it to HCF which is also not for profit

    • Thanks just been comparing it, it seems bit expensive and pay back is lot less :( but again everyone's telling me Teachers insurance is the best and if given an option one must take advantage and join. So am confused :(

  • Hi Cisco,
I've been with Teachers' Health since birth. First on my parents' account and then (once I turned 18 and was no longer a student) on my own. I cannot praise them highly enough. The rebates you get back are higher than many others give (from my experience with friends) and the online claim service makes it so easy (receive $$ back in about 48hrs). A recent positive experience was that my parents claimed $1000's of orthodontic work for me when I was in highschool and now I've got my own account, I can claim $1000's again. Also, nice call centre staff and they care for the well-being of members - not shareholders.

    • How is your experience now 6 years later? I'm also looking to join. Reviews are saying it's tricky to claim.

      • They are utter bastards when it comes to claims. If there is any reason to reject, they will.

Look out for their 2 year rule. It's from the START of the treatment, not the end. So if you have a multi-year orthodontic plan, make sure you claim EACH MONTH, otherwise they won't pay if you claim at the END of the treatment.

(ps: I have a seperate complaint - they wont pay out my childs orthodontic treatment, am trying to resolve this but it doesnt look good. There goes $2500 worth of claims!)

        • If your wife had followed procedures, then you would have not been denied as per your post https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/621313

Don’t go calling them bastards when it was your wife’s fault.

  • Please see my first comment given in 2013 that I’d forgotten. I’m still with TFH. No regrets.
