Most suitable camera for baby photos/videos? GoPro?

My Wife & I are looking for a new camera to take Photos/Videos of our Baby. I've been researching a few different ones online. We dont want a big bulky DSLR $500-600 or even more, willing to spend $300-$400 on something faster than a standard digital camera-say up to 10 shots per second.I like the description of the GoPro cameras & I know they are for action/sports more specifically, the speed of the camera is most important because with our current camera being 10 years old way to slow to catch the action of our baby who is only going to get faster. So I think the GoPros would be perfect Excellent for Baby shots at a great price. Maybe even Fuji Finepix which I have seen for less than $200. Is anyone able to offer any advice on the best camera suitable for us & our Baby.
Thanks, any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Get a Sony NEX F3 (I think its the F3) that Dick Smith are clearing out for $359. Awesome buy but it might require some hunting.

Interchangeable lenses so bigger than a pocket camera but great results and easy to use.

Don't get a GoPro for baby photos. It's a really dumb idea.

  • Ok thanks millhouse, yeah GoPro is No Go so I've discovered. We will check out the Sony NEX F3. Tanks for your assistance.

  • Buy something decent as well, don't go too cheap. Otherwise, you'd want to upgrade again.

I recently bought the Fujifilm X100 for casual family photos, and absolutely loved the result. I have photography background so I'm into quality image.

Perhaps, for your budget and need, you can consider the Fujifilm XF-1 too. It has great image results. The Sony NEX are good too. Try and decide for yourself.

  • Yeah, like you realized, NoGoPro. I agree Sony NEX series are really good. I would also look into Micro Four Thirds cameras such as Olympus Pen series, although they would probably be a bit out of your budget. A baby is not going to move that fast that you'd need 10fps and anyway it's the autofocus speed you should pay attention to, not so much the frame rate. And unfortunately, once they start running around, the only way to get properly focused photos of real action is to go with a DSLR, as even the NEX and Micro Four Thirds series cameras can not compete with even the entry level DSLRs when it comes to focus tracking of moving subjects. Another thing that you won't get with a compact camera or even a NEX or MFT camera with their kit lenses is a shallow depth of field, i.e. nice blurry backgrounds. Well, even for a DSLR you would need to buy a prime lens (such as Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II), as the kit lenses just aren't very good.

  • I heard the Nex 5 by sony is a great still camera and photo qualities are quite good. might look into it and consider.

  • We got a lumix DMC-ft4 for our two year old and us for him full waterproof shock proof great image quality and video. GPS taging is quite good. Was under 200$ from JBhifi.. It won't do 10 shots per second but neither will my canon 5d mkII… Lumix is a compact camera but worth a thought. #my2cents. 2 year olds take some pretty funny cool shots.. :)

  • Fujifilm x10 or is you want a not-so-overpriced waterproof webcam wait for this
