Seagate Expansion HDD - High pitched whistling from HDD power block/plug when off

Anyone have this problem with there new Seagate 3TB like I do?

The drive works fine but when off the plug (in the socket) begins to emit a high pitched whistling sound.

  • Maybe contact Seagate
    http://www.seagate.com/about/contact-us/technical-support/

and they might send you a replacement PSU.

  • Yep. Will do that. Just curious if there are other OZBargainers with the same problem.

  • Get a tool to check the SMART data on the drive (depends on your OS/whatever). If anything says the drive is failing return it.

  • Drive works fine. Its when its powered off (not connected to a PC) the noise comes from the Power Supply.

    • My LG monitor has a noise too coming from it's power supply unit and it occurs whenever the screen brightness is not turned all the way up.

It's actually common problem attributed to bad capacitors or inductors. Most people call it "coil whine" to describe the high pitched singing sound.

  • +1

Just read the Voltage and Amperage info off the power supply and match it with a new replacement one.
I have one that just died and WD wanted me to some how back up the info on this 1TB HDD as it was the largest that you could get at the time. Then send the HDD & Power Supply back to them for replacement appraisal, as the power supply was only faulty. "STUFF THAT"
I replaced the power supply and have had not a problem since!!!
It is common that the faulty caps in power supplies whistle. Most all new power supply's no longer use capacitors and are much lighter run cooler and more compact. I have replaced the external power supply on a number of TVs that are very similar to a laptop PC.

  • Seagate ended up replacing my Power Supply ONLY under warranty which is what was needed. The replacement is a different make/model and completely silent :D

    • hopefully they do the same for me

  • I was going to say, it sounds like you need to call a priest.
