RedBull Mobile closing down

I was thinking of recharging for another 365 days after my account lapsed at the end of May, but failed to receive a '100 off' deal like last year , so let it slide.
Kind of glad now. Customer service might be about to get 'interesting'.

This is just a heads-up for anybody still on RedBull who doesn't get an email, and for whom this might otherwise come as a nasty surprise…

You won't able to recharge after September the 1st.
All existing access contracts will be honoured until expiry.
No new plans can be signed up for as of now.

  • I took up the Red Bull "deal" thru one of the group buying sites (linked from ozbargain)
phone calls were fine but in my area the Data was slow so let it lapse…

Luckily plenty of other offers to be found still- just bit painful sifting the T+Cs
and the added 400Mb daily download limits on unlimited (ha) etc etc.

    • Yeah, I have a Kogan sim I haven't activated yet (took 5 weeks to arrive). At least with Ruslan having won the case he brought against his Telstra wholesaler, you won't be permanently kicked off if you use more than 400MB on three consecutive days - or use 1GB in one.

I'm actually (pending experience with Kogan/Telstra non-NextG), a little bit sad at the loss of the RedBull/VF service. I'm sure I wasn't the only one who was actually getting consistently fast data speeds (much better than Optus). Depends of course on where you are and where you tend to travel.

Incidentally, anybody who is considering options and is thinking about Aldi Mobile, should at least read this first … www.prepaidplans.com.au/2013/06/sorry-aldi-mobile-your-are-f…
      Holy hell, what a runaround.

      • Didn't have any problem activating my Aldimobile SIM. Or for that matter any of the other mobile providers I've used.

These providers (and also credit/debit card issuers) use electoral rolls and other databases to verify identity by computer. If you have not been at an address for long, or for some reason there aren't enough details on you, then manual verification is required and at this point organisations vary in their aptitude. Looks like this guy got all the bad luck.

For a while their starter packs were scarce in shops but now I see they are back on the shelves. Reception is excellent and I'm happy to park a spare phone on their plan.

        • I got an also starter pack instore and had the same problem activating it.

The number was already active with Telstra so they didn't have a problem with my id.

  • I can't see anything mentioned on their social media accounts (Twitter/Facebook). A bit more discussion on Whirlpool starting here, which links to this page on RedBullMobile's website:

With the prevalence of ‘open’ mobile platforms in Australia, Red Bull is taking this opportunity to focus its marketing efforts on existing and future digital assets to allow an even greater number of consumers to access the World of Red Bull through their own mobile device.

Red Bull MOBILE will continue to service existing customers until the customer’s current recharge or contract expires. This includes their ‘Ticket to the World of Red Bull’.

  • Scotty, my interpretation of their very carefully (and to me, amusingly) worded first paragraph was that they might put out a new phone app or two at some point. Maybe that will more usefully assist their 'marketing efforts'.
Alas, given their primary motivation, I don't think I drank even one can of Redbull during the year I used their phone service…

  • +1

    Red Bull Gives You Rings…
Not any more, it seems. How will I call Mark Webber?

  • i'm rather disapppointed to learn of this. my 365 day recharge expires january next year then i'll have to go looking around for a new provider again.

    • Kogan & Aldi do a similar deal on the Telstra network for cheaper, so you don't have to look too far!

      • i'm a bit put off by Aldi after reading Tas' post above. and Kogan too from that "excessive use" incident earlier this year.

but Kogan's 365 definitely looks like good value (even though i only paid $265 for my RBM recharge with the 100 off offer and Kogan's bolt-on packs aren't even close to RBM's in value)
