Transferring registered motorbike from NSW to QLD (CTP/Safety Certificate/Rego)

I recently purchased a motorcycle from NSW and want to get in registered in where I live in QLD. The bike is already registered in NSW until April next year, has a personalised number plate, has a NSW safety certificate and NSW compulsory 3rd party insurance.

The seller 'transferred' it online to me using the MyRTA(?) website and my Queensland license details, he also says he submitted a paper form that I signed, just in case the online didn't work with QLD details. Now I have no idea what I require to register the bike in QLD, as the Queensland Transport website only describes transferring a vehicle from interstate that's already in your own name. Am I correct in believing that the sellers online transfer has put the bike in my name?

The TMR website also says you need a safety certificate and CTP certificate to register a bike, but to 'transfer' you only need a safety certificate? Am I correct in thinking that I can just go to Queensland Transport with all the NSW paperwork and get it registered in my name or do I need a QLD safety certificate? Is the NSW CTP valid in Queensland for rego? Do I return the personalised plate or can I keep it?

If I need QLD paperwork, can anyone recommend a bike workshop in Brisbane that can do a single seat conversion mod plate, safety certificate and a basic service cheaply? If I get all new paperwork, can I get a refund on the 10 months remaining on the NSW rego?

Lastly, would I be better off just riding it on its NSW rego until 2014, then getting QLD paperwork when I've had time to save up for it?

basically you have to cancel the NSW rego and start from scratch in Qld
(or take the wait till 2014 option you suggest)

  • Cancel NSW rego and rerun plate (for refund?)
In QLD you need RWC, CTP etc before going to the Transport Dept.

If possible use the remainder of the NSW rego. When you get a refund from the RMS it wont include some levies that make up a large portion of the green slip cost.
