Best laptop for a non-gamer for around $1000

Hey guys,

I'm not too cluey with what I should be looking for. Ideally I'd like something relatively light with decent battery life. I'd be using it a fair bit for video editing, so I think I'd need at least 8gb of RAM and a good sized HDD.

Any help would be much appreciated. Probably looking to buy within the next two weeks.

Cheers.

    Chromebook lol.

  • I'm looking for something similar.
For uni civil engineering student use.
Probably need better CPU for 2D/3D CAD and math/force/structure computation
Not sure if a dedicated graphics card will help with 3D CAD

considering some of the offers by MSY at around $1000 (i7, 8gb ram, dedicated graphics)

    any advice?

It will. Note however that 'dedicated' covers a huge range of products.

Haha, I was looking at the MSY deals earlier today. It makes my brain hurt… Sooo many options.

If you are an Engineer I would suggest the ThinkPad series.
(Typing this on a T430, the best laptop I ever owned!)
If you want a lighter machine, then try T430S :) Make sure you get the one with dedicated graphics. Might be a bit more expensive than your budget but it sure is worth the money. Also try PMing me I might be able to help you get a cheaper unit the same way as I got mine :)
      Cheers

    but say

I'd be using it a fair bit for video editing

is this the odd editing once a week or full time job/hobby 20+ a week

once a week - just get a cheap $500 it mite take 10 min longer to render
Full time - why are you getting a laptop when you should build a PC

tip - the different from a really good $4,000 pc to a shit $300 2nd hand eBay isn't worth the money unless ur working fulltime = time is money

    http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/cpu-charts-2012/-31-Handb…

$90 CPU Intel Core i3 vs $1200 Intel Core i7-3960X

If your asking for help here - i am guessing it just a small hobby/ the odd youtube

    Just save ur money
