Basic laptop

Hi,

I am looking for a basic laptop for my parents. They just do some browsing, watching video's and emailing. Nothing flash. Their budget is a maximum of $500,-

CPU minimum of Pentium 2Ghz dual core. RAM minimum of 2GB. Screen is a standard 15.6' and preferably has a DVD burner. Windows 7 or 8 would be nice.
They only store their photos on the HDD. Thus I guess a minimum of 320GB.

So what's the best we can get for under $500,-? We have a local Dick Smith, Office Works, Harvey Norman, Target, Big W, Good Guys, JB Hifi and Betta Electrical.

Personally I have had bad experiences with all major brands except for Dell. But I do use my laptop daily, so I doubt they would break a laptop soon as they only use it a handful of times each week.

Thanks in advance :o)

  • Toshiba Satellite Pro C850. Very common and hum-drum laptop, has all the specifications you're looking for.

Prices range from $380 to $500.

  • Thanks. Will let them have a look at that one and see what they say :o)

  • Hmmmm they have changed their tune. Mum just dropped the blasted laptop and is in a hurry. It would be good to have something with an i3 or i5 processor. Dedicated graphics or uma, that doesn't matter. They don't play games.
Acer currently has a cashback thing, but there are so many different models that I don't know what to look for anymore lol
