Ingress is a new Augmented Reality Game from The Niantic Project, a part of Google.

Many of the landmarks, monuments and places you pass by every day are portals, key targets for those wishing to enslave us.

Here in Adelaide the enslavers, known only as 'Shapers', and their minions, humans calling themselves 'The Enlightened', are doing well at their task.

But there is hope… many of us have volunteered to counter the threat. We can give you the tools to see the threat …along with the weapons and skills to help us tackle it.

We are the Resistance and we want you to join us.

Ingress is often described as virtual capture the flag meets Risk meets geocaching with a built in reason for meet-ups, a lot of walking and sightseeing. This is a global game, meaning there are players in every state, in every country.

All it requires an Android phone and a Google account if it sounds interesting then you'll probably have the time of your life. Excellent for those who enjoy video games but need an excuse to go outside, or those who want to exercise with a purpose!

EDIT: Invite codes are running a little low, and as I only distribute them sporadically, it may be worthwhile trying at the official website. Users below have reported a very quick turnover, 1-2 hours, which may be quicker than when I send them out.

          Then you probably shouldn't recruit on OzBargain, where members here are usually refreshing their browsers every 5 minutes to catch the latest deals, instead of getting outside and "do the hours" for the Resistance :)

          Jokes aside, yeah, it's a fun game, but in the end, it's still just a game. Have fun, and when you get bored, then move on to other things :) It's addictive though, once you get into it :P I'm cutting back on Ingress myself, though I do want to balance out the game in SA before I really move on, hence the recruitment :)

          That's the main problem. I work from home. However I just checked intel and the closest portals are about 10 minutes walk away and are already green.

    Ah Resistance always spreading the lies :)

    From a game point of view, both sides are even in South Australia. With all the spamming Resistance have done over coupon sites, gumtree and other social media I expect the teams will be lopsided soon. This is Resistance's gameplan for getting ahead - throw numbers at it rather than teamwork. It was teamwork that got Enlightened to where it is today after being massively outnumbered by Resistance since the November 2012 launch of the game.

    From a roleplay/fluff point of view. There's a new particicle discovered called Exotic Matter (aka XM). The Enlightened believe it can be used for great advancements in humanity. The Resistance believe it should be restricted and controlled. Joke is, Resistance use the same methods in-game of interacting with XM as Enlightened do. So Resistance are about the control, restriction and capitalizing on XM by corporations and Enlightened are about embracing this new particle and making it available to all.

    Freedom? Go Enlightened. Restriction? Go Resistance.

    Back to the game. Enlightened are far more motivated to pull off in-game feats like - http://i.imgur.com/ndcQkfG.png. Captured Australia for a little bit a few weekends ago until unknown Resistance GPS cheats took the guts of it down followed up by some legit Resistance many hours later.

      Hahahahaha. Good one :P Now to break down your arguments into why it's incorrect.

      If you want to join a team that does nothing apart from Ingress, then go ahead, join "Enlightened".
      This game doesn't balance casual gamers and hardcore gamers. This is a game purely about how much time individuals put in - the Resistance team is mostly made up of people with commitments in real life and can't play as frequently, as opposed to the Enlightened who seem to have nothing else to do. "Team work" has absolutely nothing to do with a side doing better. If I had no life, I could single-handedly conquer half the city myself. Also, "Outnumbered since November" is complete bullsh*t. We only slightly outnumber you since a month ago when we began a recruitment drive - January to June, you had more agents than us. We're only slowly rebalancing it now.

      Roleplaying point of view, you're also wrong. Exotic matter is all around, whether you want it or not. It's the aliens known as Shapers that is the critical factor. Resistance believe the Shapers are bad for humanity, and believe we should be cautious when confronted by something unknown. The Enlightened wish to submit to their will, whatever it may be. Neither side is restricting use of XM, otherwise the resistance would have no XM weapons, nothing to capture portals with, right? Utter nonsense.

      Ah, the word "freedom". Freedom for Shapers to control minds, do whatever they want you to do. What is "freedom" if you're being mind controlled? Resistance is not restriction. Look back at history - it's the oppressors that apply restrictions, and it's the resistance that try to resist.

      As for feats, sure. Congratulations. A relatively (compared to agents in Australia) small number of agents managed to pull it off. Don't forget, we waited out of good sportsmanship for you to finish the field before legitimately taking half of it down, well before the unknown GPS cheat from overseas. All other agents on either teams were mere spectators, and for anyone not involved to take credit or boast about it is like claiming credit for humanity's achievements merely because you're a human.

      So who do you think is lying? One brainwashed by some unknown aliens, or one who will resist them and ensure we all control our own thoughts? :P

      (Silly arguments aside, this is a game. Join a side (preferably the Resistance), play as much as you want, meet new people, exercise, and most importantly have fun :) both sides are actually made up of very nice and fun people [aside from a few, who will remain unnamed].)

        Both teams have and welcome casual and hardcore players alike. Just recently a Resistance player drove 14 hours to Roxby Downs to spend a few minutes playing the game. How about the Resistance player who paid hundreds of dollars for a flight to Port Lincoln for a few minutes of gameplay? That's more hardcore (.. insane?) than anything I've seen an Enlightened player do.

        Teamwork has everything to do with playing the game. Without teamwork, massive control fields aren't created. Without teamwork a team can't defend against the opposing team's control fields. No wonder Adelaide Resistance aren't achieving anything in-game when the leader of Resistance believes that teamwork isn't required.

        There is one thing that Resistance are doing well at… cheating. Here's a few choice selections:
        - A player who GPS hacked to Thailand and back to Adelaide within minutes. Got caught, suspended by Niantic/Google and then unsuspended and welcomed back to Adelaide Resistance after their name was changed. They still play to this day.
        - Resistance spies in our Faction chat. How do we know this? The incompetent ones reply using the wrong account and reveal themselves.
        - Sharing phones/ingress accounts
        - Long standing members teaching new members how to fiddle their GPS so they remain locked at the location they last logged out as - effectively GPS hacking. How do we know this? One of your own Resistance players contacted us and explained what was going on since Adelaide Resistance leadership (looking at you Highwind) didn't give a damn.

        Despite the Resistance's decision to cheat in an effort to dominate once again, local Enlightened refuse to follow such underhanded tactics and welcome anyone with the morality and good judgement to enjoy the game within the rules.

        Now for the role-playing perspective. You're wrong on most points, check out the Ingress Wiki over at http://niantic.schlarp.com/.

        Regarding the mega-fields. Over 200 players were involved at some point during the weeks leading up to and including the day the megafields were created. Apparently it will feature in the upcoming Ingress Report ep 17.

        Aliens? Lying? Oh, you're role-playing again. Check the wiki again, it covers everything.

        Join a side (preferably the Enlightened) who play by the rules and who have a zero tolerance to cheats or Resistance who will try anything (but teamwork) to get ahead and still fail.

          Just like an "enlightened" would say. You should be a politician! :D One person cheated! Their whole team cheats! :P do you want me to list all of the "resistance" players that Enlightened players have for spying? I'm looking at YOU, since you have one yourself ;) GPS "lock" is also done by both sides, and you know it. It's a bug in the code, and regardless of faction, some will abuse it.

          As for "leader" of the resistance and tolerance to cheating - WTF are you on about? I am a player, I have no authority over anything my team does. I am no mod, I have no additional powers. Apart from saying "don't do it", which we done plenty of times, should we go and destroy his/her phone or something? Just because I'm active and others look up to me, means nothing in the game.

          and finally, ZERO TOLERANCE TO CHEATING IN ENLIGHTENED. THAT IS THE FUNNIEST THING I'VE HEARD :D You know that's not true, and yet you lie through your teeth.

          Also, team work mainly applies for big fields only, which is very short term. It is important, but not what i'm referring to. Dominance is number of portals controlled, which is purely hours played.

          Cheating isn't really a big deal, while it's true the Resistance had some issue with it months ago and I don't think it has happened since - I suppose those players learned their lesson and want to fight fair :)

          I wouldn't worry too much about it now, both teams are largely cool people. Go and read up on the story for either team if you like, and make a decision from there or however you choose, you're welcome either way.

          Cool :) We don't have resident Glenelg players (we have some nearby in port Adelaide etc), so you would be a great help! And CBD-wise, there are plenty of portals to level up on - you can get to L2/L3 in a day or two just purely from hacking green portals around you :) Either way, when you join, join Resistance, and contact us in COMMs in-game! :)

    Uhm. When the .apk game came out for the US, Whirlpool peeps just got the .apk and installed it on Australian Phones and it worked completely fine.

    I was playing in redfern for a few hours. It was "fun" I guess.

    At that time, when the WP community were on it, there was about 7000 people playing in sydney at the time.

    Melbourne had about 10 000.

      There is rumours an official iPhone release at some point, but personally I wouldn't hold my breath… If you have a jailbroken iPhone, I have read of an unofficial version, but it is very limited in functionality (so I read, since I don't have an iPhone)

      Very few people cheat. The codes arent based on a particular side. You choose one after training. I'm enlightened and we have fun. Pick what you're friends are as this is a social game.

      You do realise that people on both sides cheat? I can list various ways the enlightened players cheat as well, such as fake accounts, abusing bugs in the system, etc, but to assume a whole faction cheats because of one or two people is like saying "I'm not gonna live in a certain city because there was a couple of major crimes committed".

      You should definitely join the "Enlightened", because you obviously are "enlightened".

    Hi all,

    I'm one of the local Enlightened in Adelaide, the "bad guys" as the good Mr highwind has noted :)

    This game is a ton of fun! I highly encourage everyone interested to try it out, either via invite codes - PM me - or by requesting an invite on www.ingress.com which currently appears to go through within minutes.

    You are welcome to use my invites to pick either faction, I think having more players active in Adelaide is awesome regardless of which team they choose. The game is fun, dynamic and addictive and has a great social aspect that is sorely lacking in most online communities. Plus, you'll soon be enjoying walking a lot, and how is that ever bad?

    In the past, the game has been lopsided locally one way or the other, with either team having more players or more territory than the other. After control of the city slipped from Resistance to Enlightened, local Enlightened pooled together invites to get the local Resistance a membership boost and get them back into the game - I can't speak for all of us, but I know personally I have had some great times meeting up with players from both teams and most of us look forward to meeting more people, be it friend or foe :)

    Currently the local Resistance have more players than Enlightened, but Enlightened control more territory. I'd like to think that part of this is because of our meritocratic and leaderless culture, but I'll likely be dismissed as using my Shaper mind powers to sway people :p

      Hey guys, regardless of what team you are part of you'll have fun. Its a great game.

      If you are in Sydney and are interested in joining the Enlightened let me know and I can hook you up with an invite, and connect you with players in the area.

      Personally I am most regular in the North Sydney/Northern Beaches/Neutral Bay area, and we are actively looking for recruits in these areas. We have lots of friendly players in the area that can help you learn the ropes, and gain levels. Boys and Girls are welcome.

        I must admit, I don't think many of those I sent invites to actually played much… At least not in SA… So despite having sent out lots, the hit rate is fairly low… Best of luck though! Good to get more people aboard, regardless of faction :)
