ARMA II: Combined Operations $8.49 @ Steam

160

Posting this deal as the Steam Summer Sale thread only has ARMA 2 listed. ARMA 2 + Operation Arrowhead expansion pack is what is required to play DayZ and other games like Domination, Wasteland, Takistan life, etc.

Works out to be $8.49 for the combined operations pack, which includes both of them. Correct me if I am wrong, but is this the best price it has ever been prior to the explosion of DayZ?

Great game to pickup at this price, I've got about 300 hours out of it and feel it was definitely worth my $40 when I paid for it.

If you guys feel this shouldn't be posted due to the Steam Summer Sale thread please tell me and I will ask a mod to remove it.

Have a good day.

  • What's the community of DayZ like? The only thing that's holding me back from buying this is that I've been reading up on people complaining of the increases in private areas for server donators to roam around in. Sounds like it breaks the immersion of the whole survival experience.

    • I've never heard of a server which does that. But a good way to avoid it is by playing on well known private hives is would be a good way to avoid that sort of thing, many well known servers don't want to ruin their reputation.

    • Try Day Zero, huge improvement on those issues.

DayZ is great (for a couple of days) It gets very boring quickly though if you don't have a crew to play with as it is primarily a PvP and when there are big well established teams roaming around taking you down ASAP it kinda gets old quick.

      • Yeah its definitely a game you want to play with 2+ mates.

  • I still don't get what dayz is. Is it an MMO but with smaller private servers?

    • +1

Think of it as an open world survival game, which your life can range from 3 minutes to days of playing time depending on what you do. There are dozens of mods, which add content, improve performance, etc.

You play with about 50 or so other people on a ton of custom maps; get gear, then kill those people. It is a very rewarding game, but requires a bit of patience.

      • So there is no 'aim' besides not dying?

Guessing progress is saved when disconnecting from a server?

        • Yes progress is saved.

And don't worry about the aim, as long as you get immersed in the game your self preservation will kick in and the game will be really fun and scary to play.

        • The aim is to survive, which has become harder and harder with each patch. Excluding white listed and privet hives, your progress is saved on every other server. You play on "Aussie Public #1" and log off and then go to "Aussie Public #2", you will have the same character, items, ect.

        • DayZ epitomises "emergent" gameplay. There is basically no lore or backstory, very little in the way of rules, and plenty of freedom to create your own narrative. I could understand how this might not interest some people, but judging by the popularity of DayZ and the emergent gameplay big gun, Minecraft, there are plent of people that soak it up (including me).

If DayZ is not your thing, The main game is still the best milsim around. Better for multiplayer and scenarios though as the main campaign is a bit rubbish.

Plus there's thousands of mods if that's your thing.

    • I'm ashamed to say that I have never tried the Arma 2 game at all, I bought it, played DayZ and moved on.
The mechanics did seem rock solid.

Chances are if DayZ is not your thing, Arma is not either.

  • Good deal, would be even greater if Amazon price-matched it with the 'Gooncave' coupon :P

    Repp'd for good post OP

  • ive been waiting for the DAYZ standalone version for too long.
maybe i should just get this, try it out before paying more for the standalone.

    • Yeah for around $13 you wouldn't go far wrong.
