Ski Hire, Chains + Lift Tickets Thredbo Discussion

I'm just about to go to Thredbo for the weekend to ski, and I thought it might be worthwhile to start a thread about cheapest rentals for each of these items, in case anyone else could use the information.

For the 2013 ski season, there seem to be a few ways to save money.

  1. Thredbo lift tickets - lift tickets seem to be the same price no matter who you get it from. Even the accommodation/package places don't seem to have cheaper tickets than buying direct from Thredbo.com.au. Discounts are available if you pre-purchase tickets online (10%off for 24 hour advance purchase, 15% off for 14 day advance purchase), but you will need a "Thredbo pass" for $5. This pass can be bought online from the same website and your lift tickets and ski hire can be 'loaded' onto the card before you go. Note that hire from the thredbo store is a lot more costly than hiring from Jindabyne (eg. 2 days performance ski+boot+pole hire with 24 hour pre-purchase is around $120 compared to around $70 in Jindabyne.

  1. The cheapest ski hire I've found to date in Jindabyne is via onsnow.com.au - you can rent stuff from monstersports.com.au or thebaseskihire.com.au through these guys and get 20% discount, plus free helmet hire with most items. Rates for both monster and thebase are the same. eg. 2 day hire performance ski+boot+pole hire or performance snowboard+boot is $85 less 20% discount = $68. This is about $50 less than hiring in thredbo.

  1. Snow chains - not got a lot of info on this. most people rent in Jindabyne at one of the petrol stations.

Hope this information can be used by someone. If there is anything here that needs correcting, please let me know; if anyone has anything to add, reviews or anything, it would be much appreciated.

  • Wow, the Thredbo RFID pass costs $5 now? It was free last year!

Someone suggested this place last year for ski hire (they do chains too):

It's in Cooma and they're open pretty late (2am or something) and are quite cheap. You can get 10% off coupons in the maccas that is next to it as well. They also sent me more coupons this year in the mail (if you return you get a bigger and bigger loyalty discount).

  • Thanks for your feedback, yada. @ day hire for performance ski+boot+pole package is $77 and snowboard+boot is $95 and with 10%off comes to $137.60, so prices very similar to the onsnow deal in Jindabyne ($68 x 2 = $136) . The onsnow deal seems a better option, especially if there is a problem with fit, or for first-time visitors who may need to re-fit or exchange. I'd probably go to Cooma if I hated to queue, and their range of brands seems very good. Also, probably worht checking out for the loyalty discounts!

Yeah, thredbo charge for the pass. They say that it's good for the rest of the season "and beyond," though not sure what that means. Probably not much, haha.

Snow cams showing decent coverage higher up the mountain but very patchy in the middle. Hope it holds out until the weekend!

    • +1

Re the thredbo pass - you can bring it back each and every year and preload it online. That's what they told us last year. Same deal with perished.

      • Thanks for that. So it's not such a waste! Lol.

  • Jindysnow.com has 2 days ski hire for $60 plus 20% discount if you book online - comes to $48. They're on the way into Jindy.

    • Thanks for this info. I will call them tomo. Have you used them? Is their gear new/any good? That's really cheap!
