  • What sort of vehicle were you wanting to get?

  • no birds is the best and cheapest

  • Try Budget Rentals…I've had no problems with them, have hired a campervan twice from them.

  • +1

Please be careful in selecting hire company. Europcar has been an absolute nightmare to me this year. I am afraid I cannot recommend any other car hire companies (although I have used others with no problems, including Rent-A-Bomb in Cairns).

I will never ever use Europcar again! I collected a relatively new vehicle from them and there was problems with the clutch/1st gear. I should not have taken it out of the car park (blamed the initial undercover steep climb out of car park) but it broke down 3.5 kms from the office! Hassle waiting for the hire office to agree with RACQ to where to take said vehicle, and I had to travel to the GC airport to collect another vehicle (fortunately tow truck drivers are usually such nice people). One month later my credit card was debited about $800 and they blamed me for burning out the clutch plate etc….! Even charged me loss of vehicle for half a day! I had my own insurance arranged(through Flight Centre) fortunately and they met most of the cost, very fast and no problems with them.

Then, when I collected my vehicle (the bus passed it parked just near the front gate) in the evening so I did not see front of vehicle, I did not notice an extremely large scratch to the front bumper until the next day. Continuous phone calls I made to them did not ever have a manager return calls. Man I spoke to said all vehicles are 360 videoed on entry and departure. They don't tell you though that you cannot get access to those video tapes. My personal insurance company's legal section rang them, but unfortunately said they cannot demand that we can view/prove otherwise than their denying any damage caused on their property. Point of the videos? They only use them to help themselves, most definitely not to help customers! Didn't help me that the repair involved was about the same as my excess, so basically in a nutshell I had to pay for the damage to my vehicle.

All this drama for one week's holiday! Europcar - Never again. Lots of luck with your hire company.

  • Went with Avis -
they have a few deals at the moment
    free double upgrade.
but the $50 off was better value.

    cheers.

    • Word of caution using any hire companies (from my brother's experience) … Ensure you check the vehicle exterior and interior thoroughly before driving out of the collection point. Found out recently my brother hired a vehicle that had some damage not listed in the issuing report, so returned the vehicle to have it amended. Had he not done so it may have been too late and the company may have attributed the damage to him. You guessed it; Europcar. One wonders if more than one hirer is being charged for the same damages to vehicles; how would one know?

Good luck with Avis; I may try them next time. As I said in previous post I have never had trouble with a hire company in the past, so perhaps it was a fairly isolated set of incidents, but still once stung I would never recommend them (Europcar) to anyone.

I took out CoverMore travel insurance through Flight Centre and I was very pleased with the no nonsense claim process; believe it cost $50 at the time (covered myself and son) and turned out extremely worthwhile in my circumstances. I will do so next time I travel and have no hesitation in recommending them to anyone.
