Cancellation Policy -Hotel in Italian Alps

Hey everyone. I'm booking a hotel in the alps in Italy who have asked for 30% deposit. I tell them via email I am waiting on train fares to drop (90 days from departure) and ask what is there cancellation policy. They say 2 months or lose deposit etc. Thinking this sounds a little steep I hunt around on net and their website's stated policy is 25% deposit and 30 days notice of cancel or lose money.

I don't want to muck them around as I'm sure it can be hard to make a living in a mountain village if bookings are cancelling. I'm sure we will go through with the booking unless something unforeseen happens.

Do Oz bargainers think I should let the hotel know that I am aware of their (true) conditions on the website or just let that slip and worry about it only in the (slim) likelihood that we have to cancel? Wouldn't want to get them offside (and end up in a bad room) or have a problem should the worst happen and we have to cancel 6 weeks from day of arrival. (They may say I received email stating that 2 months notice was advised.)

Their English is pretty good but not perfect. What do you rec?

  • I would contact them to confirm, then you can rest easy…

  • I might not have been clear, sorry. I must pay deposit soon, not worried about 5% difference but a bit worried I may (though unlikely) need to cancel between 8 weeks and 4 weeks out and would not like to lose my 30% deposit (4 people for a week). Should I make them aware that I have read website and know my rights or let it slide?

politely mention you've just noticed the policy on the website and ask them to clarify what the proper cancellation policy is

Can you book it through a booking service such as booking.com or Agoda? If so, you are subject to their cancellation conditions, not the hotels.

Establishments are sometimes slow to update websites so it could be that they have become more strict. Ask for clarification.
