Buying a New MTB for trails.

Hey OzBargain, I'm looking in the market for a new MTB for trail use near Glenrock near my place in NSW Newcastle.

Was wondering if anyone has any recommendations, my budget isn't very big. was hoping around the $500 mark for something average. Doesn't have to be front and back suspension was just looking at Hard tails in general but dual suspension for that price range would be awesome.

Also hoping that it would be a 29er bike as i test rode my mates one and it feels nice and big.

Thanks in advance. I'm looking at one of these but it's only a 26".

  • If you want a dually save up $2k+

I would go with a brand name, Giant/Malvern Star are good value for money

^^ $650 retail but you can bargain and get the price down. Specs aren't as nice, But the frame will definately be better than the fluid and its a 29er.

29ers will always cost more for the same components as the bigger wheels cost more.

Have a look at second hand, You might find something nice on gumtree for around 500-600

  • Also found some bikes on gumtree to look at

  • I probably wouldn't buy new - you can get some great deals if you have a search set up on gumtree - the good bikes go FAST.

I bought a second hand dual suspension GT in almost new condition for $550 from gumtree - called within half an hour of it being listed and by the time i'd arrived he was getting dozens of calls from people all over the state. The bike is amazing, although a few years old, but a friend bought the 2012 model of the same bike 2 weeks later for $2k. Retail for mine new was $2.1k.

Ask stores if they have something from last season or the season before that they're clearing out as you'll be able to negotiate a much bigger discount on these.

Otherwise look at Evans Cycles in the UK - they can ship them over, which is exxy, but bikes are still cheaper there than here even including the shipping!

As well as Giant that Mattwilko mentioned, check out GT, Trek and Specialized.

  • thanks guys, i'll have a look into those brands.

  • I bought the Polygon 29er - CX 3.0; amazing bike! Cheap too; around $760 delivered.
