You can input all those into the carsales website and it will give you a bunch you can look at.

I was looking to upgrade a while ago from my navara d40 and kluger seemed the best drive.

  • Nissan Dualis Plus 2 Ti, but those 2 seater on the back are either for kids or adult with height less than 1.6 mtrs. :P

  • The new Fiat Freemont JF Lounge? SUV style, leather seats, maybe ~$39k driveaway with optional 3rd row of seats?

  • Be careful with 3rd row seats. As you need a booster seat under 7 (Victoria, not sure about other states) and they are no good for adults there is almost no point for small fold out seats if they can't take boosters. I have a 2004 XC70 with this problem.

  • Try the Ford Territory. Not sure about the price range but if they have some sort of promo going on, then you might get one.

  • Hyundai Santa Fe, Diesel (mid and high end models), 7 seater and you can get leather seats and loads of luxuries(reverse camera, sensors, satnav, etc)
Fuel efficient, value for money but if you use all 7 seats the space is lacking.
You can fold all row 2 and 3 seats to move any items.
All the best in your search.

    • same platform and drivetrain as Santa Fe is the Kia Sorento.
An SLi should be available in your price range.

nobody has yet mentioned a Holden Captiva. well within your price range - probably not mentioned because they feel cheap compared to the alternatives.

I was in exactly the same position with requirements (except the leather seats) this time last year:

The Dodge Journey/Fiat Freemont (same car, different badge) was appalling built - the headlining was loose on the floorstock model!
The Kluger rode like a dog and didn't have that much space.
The Hyundai Sante Fe and the Kia Sorento were tight inside and felt a bit budget - although the new Sante Fe has since been released.
Holden Captiva is a Daewoo and felt worse than the Korean cars above.
I liked the Dualis+2 but it was genuinely tiny inside - if your kids are small and you plan to offload the car before they are big, then maybe worthwhile.
We really liked the Territory but the 3rd row was a bench seat and with 4 kids and a pram we need one back seat up and one down for the space. With the bench up, we couldn't fit the pram. We told the dealer if he could get the pram in with 2 adults, and 4 kids, we would buy - he couldn't.

In the end, we got the Mazda CX9. New model about $45 driveaway, demos available. You would need to stretch to the luxury model to get leather.
Its fairly thirsty as its petrol only, but its also a big car with lots of space. I try to drive frugally so average over its life is ~13 L/100km. Very happy with the purchase and would recommend.
And I'm 1.8m+ and can sit comfortably in the third row - although I wouldn't for a long trip.
And with the 3rd row up, we can still fit the pram in behind so you still have some space 7-up.

Need any help, let me know as happy to try.

  • VW Multivan… not sure of the prices but positives are
2 side doors for easy access
7 seats and still room for pram etc in the back
Rear seats all good to go for child seat
    Great fuel figures
    Quiet in cabin
Has heated seats for frost morning !
    Cheers

  • cool. thanks for the tips and suggestions everyone.

    arend- great post.

looking at the peugot site and checked out the 4007. though the 3rd row seats look very "emergency /short trip only" in terms of comfortability.

5008 looks decent though not a suv but nice.

go to check out some dealerships now to look at the cars physically.

    • The Peugeot 4007 is actually a rebadged last-gen Mitsubishi Outlander - look at them side on and you'll see what I mean. The difference is the 4007 is diesel only whereas Outlander is petrol focused.
Not a bad car, but the 3rd row was an afterthought - and forget about carseats there!
Inside, the Mitsu dash is far from special, but not sure what the 4007 is like.

The 5008 is based on the same architecture as the Citroen C4 Picassa.
Not bad cars - great packaging in small size, although not SUV - but we are in the country so were concerned about servicing and dealer availability.

I tried to be pretty thorough last year (although I may have missed some) + I'm a car guy so I enjoy this sort of thing. So if you want any other info, or have a model you're thinking about, feel free to hit me up.

      • shall do. much appreciated.

our current car is a 2007 tuscon city. odometer is hitting 120K but still going strong.
infact, it could probably go another 100K. not an issue with it. unfortunately we are growing out of it.

        • That was our problem too - 2004 Honda Accord Euro with 120K and still tight as a drum. Would have loved to have kept it, but we didn't fit.

  • We have a Kluger Grande and it fits all you requirements, although less than $45,000 new or demo (max 3000kms), could be a bit tricky.

It is a great car to drive (my first Automatic car ever) and the kids love it. Roomy and with the entertainment system it keeps them very quiet.

  • How do you find out which cars are rebadged? For example old Ford Telstar and Mazda 626?

    • reviews state it usually.
