Should i buy or hire Snow Gear?

Hi all,

I am going to the snow mountain in 2 weeks and are in the market for snow gear such as shoe, jackets and paints.

Does anyone know any good bargain for these gear at the moment(i know the Big W and Aldi sale are long gone)..

Also, does anyone know what the cost to hire these equipment, is it cheaper to hire them?? Link to the hire shops

would be much appreciated..

Thanks in advandced

  • It all depends on how long you're going for and where you're going. Then you can establish a baseline price for the rental.
I think you'd be doing well to find an Australian seller doing a snow gear special at the moment, and if you're going in two weeks, you're kinda out of time to order from the UK or America.
Unfortunately, it looks like you're going to be weighing up the cost of Australian renters vs. Australian sellers.

    • i only go for 3 days, and not sure where yet because my GF's family organise it

  • If i had to hire, I'd goto www.skico.com.au in Cooma (10% off if you book online).

  • Rebel Sports were doing 50% off Arctic Star snow gear as late as last Thursday, when I passed through. Probably worth a look; jacket and pants should set you back $100, then add goggles, thermals, socks, gloves, whatever else you feel you need and can't borrow from a friend.

    • Thanks, i ll give it a visit tomorrow

  • If you know anyone in Qld, Slacks Creek Aldi still have ski trousers (reduced to $30) jackets (a couple) etc left.

  • I'd definitely buy snow gear - jackets/trousers/gloves.. they're on your body, people sweat in them (yes, you do sweat in subzero conditions). Would you hire boardshorts for the beach? (Most people go to the beach 1-2x a year, but are willing to spend $70 on a pair of shorts)… Similar analogy. Anyway, your new snow gear will least keep you dry since it hasn't been used and abused. Worst thing about snow is wet/damp gloves and ass. It is worth every penny to stay warm and dry, you'll be miserable otherwise.

    • I wear shorts 24/7/365 on the Victorian coast :P

I'd personally buy, rental prices are pretty high, few years ago before I bought my own to rent it was about 20% more to buy the same gear than rent. Aldi have some have decent gear in most stores cheap.

  • Not sure which state you're in but Rebel Sport Clerance Outlet in Harbour Town (Docklands, VIC) always seem to have snow gear quite cheap.

I went to Buller last month and friends paid about $70 for boots and snowboard hire if that helps!

  • I have an addiction to visit every pawn broker around Victoria, I'm not sure why, it's not like I'd ever buy anything… Hoping for a bargain I guess, either high end audio, or watches. I have noticed a lot of stores have large ranges of snow gear. O hit up the local cashies and see what they have.

  • I am guessing that if you are calling your destination the snow mountain then this ids probably not a regular thing for you. If you were going to make this a new hobby or at least a place for an annual holiday/trip I would say buy your own stuff. If this is going to be a once in a lifetime trip to see some snow I'd say hire!
