Looking for great tequila ~$100 - The great alc excise and hype/choice!

Hey Oz,

I know a lot of you out there like to enjoy a good drop, and I bet there's some proper connoisseurs among the riff raff here. Ive recently started getting back into tequila after finally making the move from nasty things that give the drink a bad name, to the more hyped and semi decent drops of Patron, Cabo Wabo etc. Im basically looking for a reposado or anejo and 100% blue agave. I got a bit excited looking at the cheap and plentiful brands overseas and saw most of the higher priced and hyped ones like Patron etc are twice the cost here than overseas where they are regarded as still overpriced and hyped drops. Then I figured out how huge the excise and duties would be and that a bottle that might be $30 in the U.S would cost me nearly $200 after all costs.

At the moment ive sort of got these as options…
Herradura Reposado - $86 https://www.1stchoice.com.au/Spirits/_7286320 (I havent tried this but read favourable reviews)
Don Julio Reposado - $85 http://danmurphys.com.au/product/DM_366651/don-julio-reposad… (tried once, seemed decent)
Cabo Wabo Reposado - $75 http://danmurphys.com.au/product/DM_385007/cabo-wabo-reposad… (drinkable, dont mind this)

I havent included Patrón as it is 100% over hyped - but aside from that decent - and id rather buy something that was a nearer reflection of quality>value..

Basically, these are the most available semi decent tequilas I know of in Australia. A lot of the other ones aren't importing in quantity and thus price and hype make a number of decent drops out of reach.. Im happy to spend about $100 :) Twist my arm if you know of something super and not far off but I dont want to be paying $150 for a drink that wont be twice the Van Halen Cabo Wabo… Im in Melbourne, so hopefully an avoid the wait and postage charges too with some places.

Really appreciate your boozey thoughts on this one..

  • I am not really a tequila enthusiast.
But let me ask you this as you are - do you take the drink as a shot or sip on it? If a shot, is it a quick down or slow.
Just wondering, because 90% of the people out there drinking tequila are just doing it to get wasted very quickly and just skol it down quickly, its good to hear from someone appreciating the flavour.

    • Well, when I used to only know tequila and its bitey cousin mezcal through the cheap n nasty versions (jose cuervo etc) the only way I could get it down was like an oyster - fast, with some salt and lemon/lime… or in a cocktail…

Now that ive had some time with a few nicer drops, im someone who'll sip at a flask, or happily do the odd neat shot of something like Cabo Wabo - Patron. Im not really looking for a Blanco type experience where the flavour is almost non existent, except for the bite - I do enjoy good strong flavours…

I used to be right into my whiskies and I enjoy the bite of quality gins and other things. Most spirits I drink neat these days, unless its festival season and im making some superb cockatil with 12 kinds of aweome…
