Most recommended notebook/tablet for uni?

So I decided to take the plunge and do a mid year enrolment for a uni course, it also happens to be that my tablet has died (droid/cube u30gt) and the graphics on my notebook seems to be on the way out.

I have a bit of money to spend but obviously don't want to spend any more than I have to. I have been considering another tablet and notebook, I have also been thinking about the transformer tablets running windows and thought I'd find out what worked well for others?

Thank you in advance,

  • Macbook Air 13"

  • Could combine both and get a Surface Pro.

  • It depends on what course you are doing and what you intend to use the laptop for. If for just taking notes and surf the web between classes, then just buy something small and cheap and save the rest. For example a 11.6inch Asus VivoBook under $400 with both touch screen and keyboard should be fast enough getting your work done taking notes during lectures, spreadsheets & presentation etc. And not powerful enough to run the latest games to become a distraction :)

  • Thanks for the info,

I probably have given you more information.

I will be studying engineering (electrical power/renewable)

I am tempted by both the surface (RT @ $350.10 and Pro @ $899.10 - student prices) and by the VivoBook ($380 for celeron and ~$650 for an i3), I no longer say I'm allergic to Mac but unless it really is the best tool for the job I'd rather the versatility of going without, same with RT I guess.
It doesn't need to be powerful, I can always grab/use a desktop if needed.

As I don't know exactly what I'll be needing it for I wonder if the surface pro might be the best way to go (although most expensive by far)
    All input/experience appreciated.

    • I would avoid RT - too much chance of a dead platform with no software.

      • point taken, thanks.

  • What do you plan on using it for at uni? I wouldn't go a tablet if you're planning on doing assignments on it. And considering you're doing engineering I would expect some sort of CAD so it might be worth getting a decent spec'd laptop with an i7 processor and a good amount of RAM. I did my whole degree with an i5 laptop, wireless keyboard and mouse and a 24" screen and that was good enough to do (limited) 3D modelling and any assignments.

edit: Something like HP envy M6-1207TX for $919

    • Thanks Brow3r,
my main concern at the moment is something to use AT uni, but capable of doing both if it needs to.
How do you think the Surface Pro would go? i5 1.7Ghz (Boost 2.6Ghz), 4GB DDR3, 64GB HDD (SSD?) Win8 Pro and it's either x86 or x64 (couldn't find detail) with the keyboard/type cover it's about $1,000?
I guess I really need to know is there any real advantage of a tablet over a modern notebook/ultrabook for use AT uni?

  • I don't know much about the surface pro. I just can't see how you could justify spending so much on what you could get in a $600 laptop.
