Giant vs Polygon - Mountain Bike

Looking to buy a bike for general cruising, looking to spend around the $600 mark. Any suggestions regarding the two brands?

Cheers

  • The Polygon Cozmic CX 3.0 I would highly suggest. Everything about this bike is amazing. $748 delivered brand new.

  • I like the specs the merida offers. Basically make the frames for a lot of manufacturers and then spec up bike at good prices. I have my 2012 500D

  • Tossing up between this Giant (http://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-au/bikes/model/boulder.29er…) and this Polygon (http://www.bicyclesonline.com.au/2012-polygon-cozmic-cx2-0-m…)

Have no idea how to read the specs, both are similarly priced, is one obviously better spec'd than the other?

  • The Giant you linked to is a 29er (Has 29" wheels) whereas that Polygon bike is a 26er (26" wheels) this is the major difference. For general cruising around a 29er is less effort to ride due to the bigger wheels. The other difference which is more important is that the Giant has mechanical disc brakes whereas the Polygon bike has Hydraulic disc brakes. I would not even consider a brand that uses mechanical disc brakes on a 29er, you're just asking for a lock up, skid or crash in wet weather and virtually exclude the bike from any off-road rides in mud etc. Of those 2 bikes I would get the Polygon.

Also have a look through this list too: http://tinyurl.com/kvw8c9x

    • Could you please explain that brake thing a bit more? Because I don't understand how the different way of transferring the braking power to the actual brakes could make a difference to how likely they are to lock up?

      • +1

I'd choose good mechanical disc brakes over cheapo hydro brakes.

The Avid BB5 and pretty good for mechanicals…

  • Thanks for the info. So something like this would be good? http://www.bicyclesonline.com.au/polygon-cozmic29-cx2-0-29er…

Also for someone who is 6ft tall, is it better to go 18.5", 19.5" or 20.5"?

    • Inner seam is more important than height.

      I'm 182cm and ride 20" bikes. 18" feels tiny.
But my legs and a big long and torso a bit stumpy.

If your proportions are relatively normal I would suggest 19.5

      • ok, thanks.
