Timber to build a table

I have decided to build myself some furniture because I am a tightarse and wanted to know where I can get some timber for it.
I am after some 2x2 2x4 1x4 1x10 etc.. if you want to see what I need\build i am just following the plans from this random site - http://tinyurl.com/koc7f9p

At the moment I am just trying to work out how much it would cost so was looking for a website that had pricing but Google has let me done.

Anyone know of a site? I'm in Sydney if that matters

  • do you have a mitre/cutoff saw with lots of teeth to do clean cuts?

    • yep, this is a must. you'll never produce decent furniture without a mitre saw or some other contraption vs a jigsaw

  • hi, bunnings have a timberyard. for 2x4 pine (35mm x 70mm) in 6m lengths, you'll pay about $12 or $11, depending on if it's treated or not. so you could base your estimate on that. otherwise you can get smaller lengths e.g. 3m, 4m, but obviously not as cost effective (although not much in it). it;s probably cheaper buying second hand items from gumtree/ebay though!

  • I built almost the same table.
You need to make the top boards very square so there are no gaps. I used a table saw, but if you are trying to save money I am guessing you don't have one.
You could use a handheld circular saw if you have a straight edge or similar to use as a fence.
I probably paid around $300 for the timber, including $100 for some nice recycled 8in wide red gum floor board I used for the top.
When it comes to furniture making, doing it yourself isn't really a cost saving, more a hobby thing.
That said, if you are after a "quick and dirty" table for use in the garden or similar, ripping up old pallets is a free source of wood. And I have sourced a lot of timber from freecycle and coucil clean ups.

  • I have a circular saw and a tritan (table top thing) that I will borrow from my old man.
I am going to make a bunch of stuff for inside and out so think I should save a fair bit. I also want to make sure that it all pulls apart so that I can move it as needed.

  • Find someplace that deals with marble/granite/glass and recycle the timber packing they use.

  • look for oldish houses being demolished. ask if you can obtain timber. I built my daughters sled style bed from reclaimed timber (except the filler head board which was $5 from bunnings). carved the legs my self.

look for op-shop or garage sale tables with revamping potential. if you can get your hands on a router to change the edging.

hard rubbish collection is a good opportunity to obtain material.

    pallets.
