PS3 / Xbox 360 Which one to Buy? Not a serious gamer

Hi Guys and the few Gals out here,

The Mrs asked me to buy a gaming console, two main objectives for her were
1) Learn dancing 2) Some Fitness games.

My objectives were
1) Some strategy games 2) Some General knowledge or other semi useful games.

I am interested in these as a media player and to play some First person shooter or strategy style games, I have never played online, so I'm not sure about how badly I'd need the online multiplayer gaming functions.

Don't like the Nitendo wii because of the controller that you have to hold in your hand while dancing. Prefer the Xbox kinect in that aspect, mainly for the ability to go hands free.

What do you guys recommend, we are not a hardcore gaming family, just used to play a couple of strategy games on Android ?

Budget is not a very big concern, say < 500 $ for everything wireless.

Here's a link comparing the specs, I also found the comments on there very useful, just here to see what the OZBargain community thinks.

    1) Learn dancing

Might want to consider dancing classes.

    2) Some Fitness games.

Pretty sure there are studies showing these aren't very effective.

Having said that if you want to jump around in your lounge room to music, the 360 has the edge due to the Kinect. If you can hold off though, I expect prices to fall rapidly when the XBox One comes out.

Might want to consider dancing classes.

Lol, that's what I suggested, but she prefers to get over the clumsy phase in the privacy of the lounge.

Pretty sure there are studies showing these aren't very effective

Didn't know that. Interesting, I will check this further.

Xbox one comes out around November not sure if we want to wait this long, will check with the mrs, Thanks for the tip.

For exercise, join a sports club or dance club (all clubs are screaming out for newbies and they're invariably friendly places). No-one is going to laugh at you, you'll get encouragement and proper coaching.
For casual gaming just use your laptop/PC/Phone/Tablet.
Consoles are a money pit. Once you've bought a game, you've bought into the ecosystem and you have to stay in that system to keep playing the games you've bought.
Given that both 360 and PS3 are nearing end of life, you'll:
        a) find that their prices drop when the new consoles are released
        b) struggle to replace it when your current console breaks down (in 3 years time).

    • About the fitness games, that is not true. It's all just plyometrics, things people do on floor days at the gym. The studies are generally talking about games where they try to make you active, not actual FITNESS games. I don't see how doing continual burpees, pushups, split lunges and jump squats can be not "very effective" as you so put it. It's just like having a personal trainer fitness video with some extra little fun things thrown in.

Remember things like p90x are all floor work (plus 1 pullup bar).

exactly what i wanted, 6 months ago. not casual gamer (mostly play on ios or android phones/tablets), thought i will like kinect.
bought it, but now collecting dust.
remember you need big space to play kinect

    • That's what I'm leaning towards too,

Not sure how long I'll play either, just thought might as well get it and if it helps her dance why not.

Does the Xbox live online gaming have a free subscription ? or is every onlline game paid ?

      • You get a free month or so when you sign up, but if you want a permanent one you have to pay, you can usually find it for about $50 a year online

      • Apart from the free first month, you have to pay for online gaming. But by the sounds of it, you wont need online anyway.

  • I'd go the 360, purely because it has Dance Revolution which is arguably the best dancing game.

  • Dancing games I'd go with the Kinect. You have freedom without needing to hold onto anything. Only down side is the Kinect does need a lot of space.

if #1 is your priority, i suggest the xbox360 with kinect. i have both consoles, but dancing is definitely better on kinect than PS move.

  • I would recommend looking in the second hand market

  • I use a Nyko zoom attached to my Kinect for my small room - works well

  • Thanks everybody,

Bought an Xbox as recommended by everyone here. The Kmart deal for 199$

XBOX 360 4GB console + Kinect sensor + Wireless controller + Disneyland adventure game + Kinect adventures game
Carnival game + 3 months XBOX Live gold.

Then went and bought a few second hand games from Eb Games, looking good, I'll come back with more questions,

    • Dealman,

A few games to get for the missus for dancing are Dance Central and Just Dance.
There is also a Zumba game out there too called Zumba Fitness Rush if she likes gym type classes.
Also, there is a fitness game called Your Shape Fitness Evolved 2012 or Nike Kinect Training.

I would buy them all online (from shops like ozgameshop or others) as it is much cheaper.

Good luck - it seems like you guys are going through the same phrase we went through (lasted 3 months unfortunately….we sold the Xbox and everything else after as it was just left in the spare room). Nothing really to lose though…we had a great time playing kinect games with each other!

      • Thanks Cheungles,
I bought the Zumba fitness rush and a few other shooting games from EB Games secondhand.

I will also look at getting the your shape one, I bought these second hand from EB games.

Apart from the CD being scratched what else should I be worried about and How do I back up these games so that I don't have to worry about the DVD's not working any more ?

Love the Kinect Adventures that came with the box, it has a few very nice games, even these can easily draw out a real sweat.

        • You can't back them up, well you can but it involves a certain type of DVD drive that is flashed with similar FW to the Xbox drive. You then need to hack your Xbox as well in order to play them.

You can install the games to the Xbox HDD (you don't have one, it'll cost you $50 at the cheapest) but you still need the disc in order to boot the game so it only saves you on loading times.

        • Wow,
Didn't know that the DRM on these was so tight. Hmm will investigate further.

Bloody have to buy "their special" Hard Disk, Their special wireless headset, starting to hate the companies already, lol.

Yeah as someone said earlier, once they get you with the cheap starter kit they bleed you dry.

        • You can put in a small thumb drive, 8gig usb or something. Might help a bit.
