Looking for some suggestions for a 55" LCD in the $1000 - $1500 range. The missus is pretty keen on having a brand name, so I guess I'm looking at the Panasonics, Samsungs, Sonys etc to keep her happy.

Give costco a try, the best thing when you buy TV( or any other product) is that you can return it at any time( your costco membership needs to be active) and get full refund, without question asked. Their TV price is very competitive compare to other big retailer like Harvey Norman or Binglee…
The good prices take in to account the membership fees. During a coupon sale, Sony tv's can be around 20-30% cheaper than the next best price.
Have you considered plasma. Panasonic st range has great reviews on pq and excellent value for money. If you can bump up the price to approx $1750 you could even get 60"
