  • When we lived in the Us, my now ex studied with FINSIA. When we returned, we took the effort to go to his graduation ceremony. He won a cash prize in nearly every subject he took. We walked away with over two thousand in cheques. I got a diploma for fun with FINSIA but never won those sorts of awards.

It pays to go with a creditable institution. You don't want to be embarrassed by something you have worked for.

  • +1

I think it depends whether you want to study for knowledge, or for accreditation in a field. If it's the latter - contact a few places and ask whether a dip or a (insert online courses here) would help at all.

    • +1 What sort of courses are you after, OP? The US-centricity isn't a problem for ones you take for knowledge.

  • easier to study at TAFE and pick up the skills cheaper than university.
    less work too.

    • the U3A is good if you just want good courses from good people with good company.

  • TAFE run open learning (online) courses still, part time or full-time. If you are not working at present and are of pensioner status, seeking employment, you may find it financially easier if you have a referral/approval from a job network agency, which would help to reduce most of the fees, etc. Job network agency (if you are a member) may also assist with the cost of books. Centrelink also pays pensioner education supplements, etc. to help cover other expenses. Wouldn't hurt to enquire from a job network agency, if you are enrolled with one, or see if there are any pensioner discounts at TAFE. I imagine you would have to prove to the job network agency your chosen course would improve upon your prospects for seeking employment.

    • there is PES for TAFE courses, NSW tafe courses are low cost though the govt may raise fees soon
am studying in tafe @ $50-100!
      per course per annum;
nsw govt looking to charge fuller fees next year it seems.

      • Wow, this sounds great. Do you have a website link?

        • best ring them and ask; am not in oz right now. overseas. not ure what the new arrangements are. away for 9 months. other states might be better depending how much the nsw govt screws pensioners.

        • @Peccadilloes:

Thanks! I'm trying to find more information now!

        • @ThePensioner:
          sometimes checking with each state tafe might poor coure cheaper than open colleges which may have a markup for their interface;
tafe is more reputable than most private providers.
oten nsw may have poorer courses from my experience with the ir rela estate course.
they also give limited 'notes' which require you to still buy the textbook.

vic tafe had better comprehensive learning materials when I saw their work before 2001.
look for complete. materials which limit your need for further books etc. which can be expensive

        • @Peccadilloes:

That's great. Do you have a link I can check out?

    • I think you get that anyway.

I was completing a diploma of networking (I.T) we went from 4 days a week to 2.5 because one full day was "online learning" which no one ever logged on, there was no exams at all. This is short for "budget cut". and the others were in-class online, which was a Cisco course and something else.

  • try Ashwood University. There motto is "No Need to Take Admission Exams, No Need To Study,
Get Life Experience College Degree for What You Already Know!" lol http://www.ashwooduniversity.net/

The degree might not be accepted by employers though… well most employers… well most likely all employers lol

  • Thank you very much for the replies!

I'm just looking for online certificates I can do that are 6 months in length or less. I want something I can add to my resume.

  • What's the best Australian place that people can suggest?

  • http://www.open.edu.au/ seems good, but the courses seem to be 6 months or more in length. Is there another company that offers something briefer?

  • Can someone please recommend somewhere where I can find out about what's available in terms of online certificates?

  • Thanks, but the reason I asked here was because I trust the people on OzBargain.

  • I'm really surprised that this topic hasn't generated more discussion…?

  • I'm still looking for a list of courses. Even if they aren't great courses, I'd love to do something that'll give me a certificate at the end.

  • Have there been any updates?

  • Why not ask your local library staff for suggestions? They are usually very knowledgeable when it comes to things like courses, training, etc. Most TAFE and university establishments print out a book on what courses are available each semester. You could ring or visit them any time. Even councils and community houses print out their available courses twice yearly. It really just depends on the subject you are looking to complete. You could also ask at Centrelink. We were directed to a Cert 3 Warehousing Operations course for my son at a training establishment operating locally by asking them … even though his job network agency appeared not to know about this!

  • Great ideas there!

    Thank you!

  • Instead of creating a new thread and waste OzBargain space I thought I'd reply here.

I've been looking at udemy.com and I'm really amazed at how cheap their courses are!

I just don't know if they give certificates after completing courses…?

    • I just made a course on Udemy on how to create certificates. Was $9999 now $1.99! Will look fantastic and appealing on your resume. For 50c more, I'll change the course title to whatever you want and give you a certificate.
