140mm and 120mm case fan dust filters. Where/what to buy?

I need some case fan filters 120mm and 140mm for a new case.

2x120mm (1 fan installed)
3x140mm (1 fan installed)

Particularly the 140mm dust filters which are harder to find as all the stores In Sydney I contacted are out of stock.

And guessing I will need some of the magnetic ones since I just want to cover/filter two of the 140mm and 1 of the 120mm unused fan slots that don't yet have any fans installed. And don't see any other way to secure the crew only ones.

Also which dust filters are better the foam/plastic, mesh or metal/aluminium type.

Comments

  • Apparently Jaycar should sell some.

If you are not in a hurry you can source them from Deal Extreme, FocalPrice or eBay.

There are pros and cons with foam, flexible mesh and aluminium mesh. Foam filters are by far the most effective at trapping dust, but mesh filters will allow more airflow. Foam filters are also less durable so if you wash them on a regular basis they will eventually break down or tear.

A problem I find with foam filters is that it obstructs airflow a little too much, so I usually prefer mesh filters such as these.

  • Saw that on EBAY for approximately $10 delivered for the 4 pack. They just don't mention the size, which I assume is the same product and size as the one from DX.

I am just not sure if that will suit my case since they will only be one. Maybe the base one that I will be able to actually install this where it can actually be removed.

    • Just so you know, there isn't any point in putting dust filters into unused fan slots. The majority of the dust comes from intakes.

      Some dust proofing tips:

      • Buy a case that already has dust filters put in. If it does not, you only need to buy dust filters for air inktakes, not exhausts

      • Positive air pressure reduces the amount of dust that will accumulate inside the case. What does positive air pressure actually mean? Its when you have more air going in than there is air going out. Remember your power supply also counts as a fan (it pushes air out of the case) so make sure you have at least 2 air intakes.

      • If you have a negative air pressure setup, what ends up happening is your case will end up sucking in dust from all the holes in your case, where there is no dust filter to trap the dust particles. Your computer case is not airtight — air and dust can get through the IO shields, PCIE brackets and the seams of the case.

      • If you have a positive air pressure, then your case will end up pushing out air from the holes of the case and will only draw air in from intake fans (which have a dust filter to ensure that only clean air goes in). This way, most of the dust gets trapped in the filter before it is drawn in.

  • Ended up buying 1 x four pack of these 140mm fan dust filters. Came to just under $20 delivered from HK.
