USA Holiday in December

Looking to go on a holiday with my girlfriend to the US for 3 weeks (mid-Dec to early-Jan). Starting to plan our trip now but we have so many questions!

Where should we spend Christmas Eve and New Years Eve?
Which cities should we spend our 3 weeks at? (Definitely want to check out NYC and LA but not sure when and for how long)
Where are some well-rated and romantic places to stay?
When should we start booking tickets and accommodation?
When/where is the best time/place to go shopping?

P.S. We are still students so we want to get the most of our money, but we have been saving up all year!

Any tips will be much appreciated.

Cheers

  • try booking with Qantas through expedia.com.br (brazil). last week my friend was able to find a return flight from LAX to MEl for $850 (normal price on expedia australia/ qantas website is $1300+)…..NOT sure if its still the same from melbourne to US but give it a try…
TIP: go to QANTAS Site and look for the cheapest departure dates and return then go to expedia brazil and choose the same date (might want to use google transalte) …The amounts shown is in Brazilian Pounds which is like 1:0.49 (use xe.com)

    Have fun

  • Is it necessary to go mid December to early January? There isn't really a more expensive time of year to travel to the US. If you were wanting value for money I would suggest moving your holiday 6 weeks earlier or later.

Also, have you researched flight prices yet? If you are interested in flying with Virgin let me know what the prices are showing for the specific dates you are interested in and I might be able to help you get it cheaper.

To answer your other questions; I highly recommend Las Vegas just because it is awesome but also because it has very cheap accommodation, great shopping (go to Premium Outlets) and cool touristy stuff like shooting guns, driving bulldozers and sports cars, Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam, etc.

Do you have a particular budget for hotels/activities? Depending on your budget and how long you are staying in LA you should consider staying here. It's a private yacht in Marina Del Rey which is next to Venice Beach (popular tourist area and relatively safe). I stayed there last year and it cost about $140 per night but looks to be around $165 per night now due to exchange rate. It has free wifi and a parking space and you will get the pleasure of saying you rented a private yacht!

  • You need to check out Backpackers accomodations or Youth Hostels. People of all ages use them. New Years Eves at Times Square is an amazing place to be. You aren't too far from Niagara Falls either, Statue of Liberty etc. Best to book well ahead no matter where you go especially for accomodation for New Years Eve.
