I've been looking at GoPro and similar devices recently because I want to take one snorkelling. The thing that strikes me with the GoPro (black edition, that is) is the image quality. The videos taken look less like a mobile phone camera and more like a decent video camera. e.g. http://vimeo.com/51618708

I think this is ultimately the difference between cheap ones like these and the GoPro. If you just want to record video at full HD (but don't really care about quality) then this would probably work.

Don't expect much from this camera, they're cheap for a reason, you can buy the same camera for almost half price from DHGate or similar websites.

Having said this, the gopro hero 3 is great, when it actually wants to work, i got rid of mine because the battery life was crap, had issues with it (others were also having issues) and the menu really lagged and pissed me off.

Good discussion here about action cams, the SJ1000 looks very good for the price from reviews so likely I will go for one of those, don't trust this one from Kogan http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2132939
