What is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is an artificial tooth or cap, which covers a tooth weakened by decay. A dental crown could be necessary for a number of reasons, for instance:

You may wish to improve the appearance of a discoloured or misshaped tooth.
You may have had root canal treatment which will need a crown to protect it from breaking.

  • So how much does the surgery cost?

    • Normally you just swipe your private health care card and then only pay the gap which is $0 in this case. Effectively this is free if you have private health cover and wish to use it this way.

Do you really want to choose your dentist based on cost alone?

      • +1

sadly, some people have no choice. my dentist quoted me $1350 for a crown recently.

i don't earn enough to afford private health with basic dental, let alone major dental cover so government clinics are the way to go for me :\

True, but equally just because they are cheaper doesn't mean they are any worse…

take a quick holiday to bangkok and get your teeth fixed at the same time :)

      • Do you have any experience in doing this ?

One of my friend looking for a place to fix dozen artificial teeth for his dad which can cost a fortune in here. Is Bangkok a reliable place for this and how expensive the work can be? Any idea?

        • Thailand and Philippines are both good. You get what you pay for though so it is usually better to pay a little more for the premium clinics in these places which are targeted specifically towards foreign tourists.

        • Talk to some people who have done this, and get some recommendations same as if you were looking for a new accountant/lawyer/doctor. Its hit and miss so if you can get a good referral from someone who has had a good experience, it will make all the difference.

        • One Thailand guy at y work place checked the prices online for artificial teeth for the other friend and he found that it cost around Aus $ 2100 per tooth. That's not very cheap when you do a dozen and adds up the travel, accommodation and food expenses. For tooth implant you have to stay in the place for about 3 weeks think and there will be few visits to the Dentist.

        • there are many threads on the topic on whirlpool

  • Hi there,

Thank you for your interest in our $0 Crown Promotion.

This offer is for both Full Porcelain (metal free) and Porcelain Fused to Metal (PFM) Crowns.

To claim this offer, patients need to be covered for 'Major Dental' by their private health fund.

No Gaps Artarmon will cover the rest of the cost (the gap fee), meaning you wouldn't have to pay a cent.
