Will my 28° Card work on ATMs with the CIRRUS logo?

Going to Japan next year and my accomm has said make sure your card has CIRRUS or PLUS logo on the back to get money out at the local ATM.
None of my MasterCards have any logos on the back, I just wanted to see if this is going to be a problem.

I looked into it a bit and found that PLUS is with VISA and CIRRUS and MAESTRO are with MASTERCARD.

But I don't know if they are all interchangable. Does it mean that mastercard will work on any ATM that has the maestro or cirrus logos?? Or does it need to be an ATM with the mastercard logo?

  • 28 degrees will let you get money out at ANY bank ATM

  • You have a bigger problem with Japan and that is many or most of their ATMs only take local cards despite any logos on them. The 7/11 ATMs are an exception.

  • Yeah I've heard that Japan is more of a cash based society as well. But we are staying in Sapporo (Niseko), Tokyo, and Nagano so there should be an opportunity to get cash out at the airport before we get to sapporo, and again in tokyo… But my main question is can I get cash out from an ATM that only has the cirrus logo on it with a 28 degrees card. Any ideas?

    • Post office is by far the best option for ATMs. Full english availability and there is not a single card that it wont work with. On top of that, there are post offices everywhere (and post office ATM's in more locations).

  • IIRC I only used the 7/11 ATMs with the 28deg card without problems. Also if you ask for more than your daily limit you won't get a specific error message, just rejection. Lower the request and it will work.

At least one non-7/11 ATM outside Sapporo airport worked for me IIRC

  • No it will not work at 7/11 anymore in Japan! "Important notice: On April 19, 2013, ATMs at 7-Eleven stores stopped accepting Mastercard, Maestro and Cirrus cards issued outside of Japan. Similarly, international ATMs across Japan, including postal ATMs, stopped accepting Maestro cards with EMV chips (but continue to accept Marstercard and Cirrus cards and Maestro cards without EMV chips). Efforts are ongoing to restore acceptance of all cards."

The only option with a mastercard is at the post offices, which are in every city but be careful they generally are only open during business hours.
A card that will work everywhere and doesn't carry any charges or fee's is the Citibank Plus visa debit.

    • There was a discussion about this in another thread and I was under the impression that in more recent news it is accepted again. But I haven't been there since 2010 so better check with someone up to date.

      • up until early August I've heard of reports that mastercard still does not work except at PO's. I would strongly recommend taking a visa card as it works at 7/11, citibank ATMs, and PO's. 7/11 is far easier to access than the other 2 options.

        • A visa card! Argh. I've already got 5 cards. That's really annoying.

        • I've just returned from Japan on 2 Aug and I couldn't use MC at 7/11. Luckily I had a Citi+ card which worked OK…. I tried to find a PO and after some enquiries, found it tucked away in the lower ground floor of a high-rise office block!

        • Damn… So do i really need to get this citibank plus account for a trip to Japan???
Its just a basic transaction account right, with a debit visacard, not an actual creditcard?

        • Yeah, just a transaction account with a Visa debit card. It has similar rates and is a good complement to the 28deg; one MC, one Visa, to cover both bases.

    • I pulled money out of Post office ATM in the last 2 days straight with Mastercard with Chips.

Also my friend was fine with his 28 degree card too.

  • I was not able to use a Visa card at a "CIRRUS" ATM in Indonesia. AFAIK it is like you say: Visa = VisaPLUS ATM and Mastercard = Cirrus/Maestro atms

  • Japan is a heavy cash based society so have some yen on you, but for any major purchases at major stores or hotels, you are fine with a 28 degree card. I would suggest you not to pay cash at those times but card it so you have more cash available to you.

As of today 23/08/13 Post Offices work with Mastercard (pulled out of my westpac card and my friend pulled out of his 28 degree card). They are plentiful and with a little careful planning the business hours are not an issue.
