Nikon D3100: Buy grey market or local?

I'm looking to buy my first dslr camera and have settled on the Nikon D3100 with the 18-55mm VR lens kit. I have looked around at the prices locally and they all seem to be about $500. I then checked online to find that citiwide is selling it for $329 delivered. Do you guys think that a saving of $170 is worth the risk of buying overseas? If buying locally, do you guys know of any places that might be cheaper than $500?

Thanks

  • I've bought from citiwide before and had no problems. It was only a compact camera but service, delivery and product were all good. I suppose the real test is if something goes wrong.

  • Yes. For a 30% saving on a not overly expensive item. it is worth the risk

  • Go for the grey import so that you can:
    a) save money, and
    b) make your contribution to support fair pricing in Australia (as the price difference is more than GST).

    • the price difference is more than GST

Yep, it probably has a bit to do with the difference in wages, too, and the added convenience of a proper warranty.

  • look around first. I have found that I can buy locally for pretty much the same price as OS for cameras.
    Do a little homework first.
    cheers

  • +1 for kogan here got my 600d for miles cheaper than anywhere else. then when they dropped the price a week later they refunded me the difference. and it hasn't missed a beat. i would recommend getting the twin lens kit with image stabilization and a cheap 50mm nikon 1.8 if your a newbie and need to get pointed in the right direction.

  • Thanks for all your suggestions. I'm leaning towards buying it from citiwide at the moment, I'm not in a rush to get it and I'll probably look around at some local stores, but I doubting that they can come as low in price.

  • Another quick question, do you guys think it is worth the extra $75 to go with the twin lens kit, or do you think the single lens kit is enough for a beginner?

    • 18-55mm is more than enough for a beginner. Save your money, once you get better, get another lens.

    • it depends what you want to shoot. the 50mm will be excellent for portraits and the larger kit lens for the telephoto opportunities.

  • It's cheaper to buy the extra long lens in kit with the package than getting it separately. I think it's good. You could always sell the lens if not needed in future. For me I started with no kit lens and got 35mm f1.8 great learning lens. Had for about two years. I then bought long kit lens after 1st year and normal kit lens after 2nd year for wide angle. It's good to have kit lens to play, see what photography you want to do and the mm length. Then sell it to get preferred photography lens. I now have 18-55 for wide only. 35mm f1.8 for General and low light. And 85 f1.8 for portraits. Lens don't loss much value if in good working order and not physically damaged.

  • I buy from digital rev, kogan and DWI. I used nikon d90 before, now d3200.
