Sound proof / double glaze window installation

I'm looking to replace the windows in my house with new ones that have better insulation (especially sound). I want to get tilt and turn or awning windows. Can anyone recommend some one who is decent quality and ozbargain prices?

  • Big country Austrlia…. where are you???????

Get out your yellow pages and pick a few places that make windows… check out their products & designs…. they usually have cards for tradesmen that can install them.

  • In 2006 we had Magnetite installed on all of our external windows. http://www.magnetite.com.au. We live on a main road in Sydney so were most concerned with noise and we got the thickest perspex option they had (from memory 9mm thick?). It made a MASSIVE difference to the sound levels.

The downside is that when you want to open the windows it is a bit of a pain pulling the heavy magnetite panels off and then having to find somewhere to put them until we want to close the windows again. The panels are bulky and heavy - I presume it's also because we chose the thickest panels they had.

Overall, highly recommend them. They were a cheap option and have reduced the noise 80%+. We have had zero problems with them. I think it was $3,000 to have 5 large windows done, whereas just buying one traditional double-glazed window frame from Stegbar was nearly that much.

One thing to note, if noise is your biggest concern, only double-glazing the windows is not going to stop 100% of noise, you will also need to sound-proof/block the gaps around your doors and also any ventilation grates in your walls. For us now, more noise is coming in through our ventilation grates than through the window frame.
