  • is a the ultimate performer,

Can you quantify this, or is it just BS?

Cheaper fans at masters, bunnings etc.
Only a few dollars more with lamp.

    • "Ultimate performer" is more of a general description than a fact, but that depends on your view I suppose. You do get what you pay for with Bunnings, Masters etc, cheap brands, cheap quality.

      • Go on, any facts, or just wild claims too vague to disprove?

  • Blades: 3 Aluminium Blades

3 blades are noisier than 4 + metal blades are noisier than plastic or wood => avoid this fan

http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/107833 is much better again :)

    • Metal blades move significantly more air than plastic or wood and are much more hard waring. Noise is negligible….

      • sorry but blade area, pitch and number are more significant factors than material re air movement, volume and efficiency

plastic can't corrode like metal and can be just as tough

noise definitely should not be ignored and is generally the most common customer complaint

        • +1

Yes, blade number and pitch is most important (this is 22 degrees by the way) but it is also fact that metal blades do move more air than timber or plastic.

Of course noise is important, its not always the be all and end all when purchasing a fan though. Whereas you see hard wearing aluminium plain white fans in a majority of homes over something with clear plastic blades. But of course that is always up to the purchaser.

        • it is also fact that metal blades do move more air than timber or plastic.

all else being equal, how so?

aluminium plain white fans in a majority of homes

timber is more common than metal

        • I don't have the physics diagrams to show you, but it is a well known fact in the industry that the shape, thickness and material of metal blades moves more air, you just have to google it to see this.

        • no need for phyics, just logic and common sense - shape and thickness matter, material doesn't

as an engineer, i'm happy to be disproved

      • Hard wearing? Are you suggesting that plastic/wood blades wear out from pushing all that air?

Silly me would have thought it was the bearings that wore out. (brushless motor?)

I like the idea of see-through plastic blades. Surely that is the way to go.
And aerofoil-shaped blades would be better than flat, but by much?

        • +1

Hard wearing due to environmental conditions, not moving air…..

  • A little OT here, I've always wondered about those sycamore shaped fans, they look a bit ridiculous but do they actually work or is it basically a gimmick? They certainly seem to command a pretty penny either way.

    • it looks hideously ugly to me. i couldn't imagine having that in my living room

  • +1

I'm hugely in favour of this deal.
    Yeah, a big fan.

  • While shipping is $10 and the fan itself isn't that great, gonna have to down this 'deal'. Once I see some efficiency data I may get interested.

Ps. looks like we all need to change out PC fans from plastic to metal.

  • We've got three fans in our house, two 4 blade wooden and a 3 blade metal. There's no doubt that the 3 blade metal moves more air as it seems to turn faster, not sure if this is by design or not - perhaps there's speed and or load limits on the wooden bladed ones?

It does however come at a cost, at high speeds, being in the room with the metal bladed one, the noise levels while not unbearable can be annoying so it rarely gets used at higher than medium speed. I currently have it on the lowest speed and it's already making more noise than the lounge wooden one on it's highest speed but it's probably moving just as much air as the lounge 4 bladed wooden one on high speed.

Having said all that, each brand and model is probably different to the next so it's most likely an unfair and irrelevant comparison so I'm not quite sure why I've bothered!
