Granted this is an outdated model but this XBR was the top of last year Sony lineup. It is still a very good screen.

The Sony KDL40XBR is built around cutting edge technology, such as a Full HD 1080 resolution, a 10 bit panel and incorporating Motionflow 100Hz. But these outstanding features is only where the story starts.

  • Full HD 1080
  • XBR Gun Metal Bezel
  • 1920 x 1080p LCD panel
  • Motionflow 100Hz
  • Integrated HD Digital Tuner
  • 1 Year Manufacturer's Warranty

  • What's everyone's experience with the brown box? How long for delivery?

    • I think they are affiliated with Radio Rentals somehow, so at least there's a reputable organisation behind them. Personally haven't dealt with them but I would recommend them to others (haven't heard anything bad about them).

  • Excellent link Morphio. I almost bought the TV… ;)

There's quite a few deals from them here. It seems like this TV has been on here twice already, and it was $1849 at end of January :(

  • Awesome price these days!

  • Does that beat this:

Sony KDL40W4500 40" BRAVIA Full HD LCD for $2,389.00
and comes with a sony bluray player via redemption worth $600

the tv is out of stock but I'm sure other places will have comparable prices.

That ones a 10bit panel. this one is 8.

That one is bravia engine pro, this one is bravia engine 2 (whatever that means)

The rest of the specs look to be the same.

    • It's been a while since I've seen the XBR but I personally prefered it over the W4000. The W4500 should be quite similar to the XBR though.

The XBR is a nicer looking set though, keep in mind it's the premium version and went for well over $4000 when launched.

That said, crap like Bravia Engine 2 vs Bravia Engine Pro is a minor difference if anything. They still use CCFL backlights and neither are LED based so they will be very similar.

For $1899, you have another $500 to buy whatever Blu-ray player you want. I am amazed by the new LG BD370 (iirc) which can view YouTube and play 1080p MKV files directly from USB. It's also the fastest Blu-ray player to date (very quick loads, much more responsive).

Then again, I'd likely buy neither, and consider the Samsung LA40A650 for $1999 with 3 year warranty. Motion is far better on the Samsung and it has a much brighter, vibrant picture. Sony's tend to be quite dull by comparison and have issues with reproducing an accurate black (get a blue tinge for some reason).

    • I guess it depends if you want to fork out over $2000 for the new W series where as this goes under the $2000 bracket. I suspect that the screen would be slightly better than the XBR as it has newer tech. You could say that the W is a better buy if you are wanting to buy that $600 bluray player as well. For me personally, I already have a ps3 so I wouldn't need that, and I'm sure I wouldn't be able to offload the bluray player for $600.

  • I bought this TV from Sony Central new for $2160 with a 5 year warranty included on 24 mth interest free. Was a pretty good deal at the time.

If you can get this price it's def worth it and on interest free even better.

This TV is so much nicer than the new 200hz and new bravias - it has no pixelation from the motionflow technology and doesn't glare as much (reflective coating)

    • 100% agree, the new "Z" series is utter crap, the motion pales in comparison to 'normal' MotionFlow 100Hz and the picture quality is next to disgusting. Would take this XBR over the new one any day.

  • I prefer the newer Sonys.

We sold the kdl40x in the christmas sales this year for $1499 and although good value for that price I didnt like the picture as much as the W series.
