Using phone GPS without a SIM Card

Probably a dumb question but here goes ….

Sometime ago I bought my wife a Nokia C5 mobile phone - which she consequently hated … and now her SIMM card lives in another handset.

My question: the Nokia has a GPS built-in(??) with free OVI maps for the life of the phone. Can I use the use the Nokia (or any phone with GPS for that matter) as a GPS without having a SIMM card installed?

  • I use my old iphone 4 as a GPS without a sim card. I use metroview

  • The Nokia needs Data to work, so u will need a SIM Card installed.

Phones that run OVI, Google Maps or Apple Maps will need DATA so they in turn will need a SIM card.

There are many third party apps you can get/buy for said devices that are completely offline.

Samsung phones come with Navigon For free which is offline.

There are paid versions of Tom Tom, Navigon etc etc etc which are all offline.

But as far as the C5 Goes.. u need sim card to use it.

  • Nokia maps doesn't need data to work — there is an offline maps downloader that comes with Nokia PC suite that you can use to load maps to SD card.

The good thing about Nokia maps (used to be called Ovi, but is now called "Here" is that you can download maps — Nokia gives users the ability to load maps of any country to your phone and use it without 3G data.

I'm not sure if the Nokia Ovi Maps downloader service is still active, or whether the newer "Here" service will work with your aging C5 mobile. Technically, the Nokia Asha and Belle series are the oldest phones that Nokia HERE will work on.

    • If the C5 is the handset.. You need Data.. there is no Offline option

  • Thanks for the replies. I just charged the phone and took it outside to see if the GPS worked with no SIM. I does to the extent that it showed me where I was on a map. I'll take it for a drive later and see what happens.

I'm going to China in a couple of months and I thought if I could get the right maps it might be handy as GPS.

  • The Nokia C5 does work as a GPS without a SIM card. Drove across Sydney today and the phone tracked our position.

Also found free maps from all over the world that can be downloaded from the Nokia site.
