BeyondPod Unlock Key $3.36 AUD on Google Play

80

Usually $7USD-ish. I think it was $7.88 AUD before? Labor day (USA) weekend sale. Has been cheaper previously though. With my luck it'll be free on Amazon next week >_>.

The base program (i.e. the free version) has a rating of 4.3 with 13k votes and 1-5mill installs, making it then most installed podcast catcher on the google play store. The unlock key has a rating of 4.6 with 2.7k votes and 100k-500k installs.

I haven't tried the others (dogcatcher et al) because I'm lazy and this one does most of what I want in a podcast catching program. Interface isn't as pretty as dogcatcher but I'm more of a function before form sort of person.

I use pocketcasts which I find to be pretty good. Only thing is for some podcasts it serves them as segments instead of the entire show. Not sure if it is podcasts fault for the station.

agreed Love pocketcasts and when I tried all the demos out and looked into reviews pocketcasts was the best and I still believe they are. Excellent UI and controls not as many customizations as dogcatcher (according to reviews I've read) though but everything I need is there not to mention the syncing between devices not sure if others have that yet. Also Pocketcasts is made buy Aussie devs! Definitely my most used app on any android device.

  • I have been using BeyondPod over dogcatcher for the last 6 months or so and prefer it for its simplicity. I set it to only sync via wifi every night at 2am, it grabs the podcasts and the related rss updates (can turn that off) and has a very easy to use interface for simple things like adding to a playlist. Fantastic price.

I listen to a lot of podcasts. I paid full price for this several months ago, and it was easily worth it. Great deal for android users who listen to podcasts regularly.

  • I've used beyond pod and didn't't like it. Right now I'm using podkicker, I would love to switch over to pocket casts but I can't work out how to use my own video player with it.

    • there used to be a setting for this let me check if there still is.
only downside I think was it didn't allow bookmarking.

    • hmm yeah seems they took it out when they did the UI change. Not seeing any options to play outside of app ethier. but I do have to say the Video player is a lot better since the UI change. Although I do miss the left and right sides being hit zones for the FF and rewind as opposed the the circles they are now.

It used to stretch to screen (zoom in cutting the left and right off) but now it defaults to widescreen with black on the top and bottom so I can see everything.

There still is an option, its hidden though… If you long press the play icon it should be in a menu.

      • oh yeah well there it is neat long pressed the title and searched the varying options but missed the long press on the play icon.

      • Thanks :D Might switch to pocket cast now :D

  • I've been using this app for over a year now and quite like it.

Have to say main purpose is to check out the OzBargain RSS feed while away from desktop.

  • On android I have only ever used podkicker, is there any benefit to the paid apps?

    • Beyondpod lets you schedule updates, automatically create playlists. There's a 7 day trial if you want to see if you'll like it, but the sale ends mid-afternoon Monday (I think, don't quote me).

      • Provably no point for me, I only listen to about 7 podcasts and it takes about a minute anytime I want to select and download one, so it's pretty easy to manage manually

        • how can you only listen to 7 there are so many good ones!

        • I listen mainly to abc ones, science show, all in the mind, future tense, Dr Karl's. Apart from that Jay and Silent Bob get old. I only have a chance to listen while on my bike, which used to be 2 hrs a day but is now about 20min, so I can't even get through those.

I will check some of those out though, they sound interesting

        • I can understand that but theres still lots of time while cooking/cleaning/various other chores and yard work too. Also since your into science while not always science related you should check out Radiolab that show is awesome actually no that I look at it why the hell is "radiolab from wync" not on my list right now….

        • Yeah they occasionally play a Radiolab show in place of a Science show when they haven't got one on the abc. I've liked the 5 or so I've heard so far

from what I can tell pocket casts can auto download new episodes as well.

  • Excellent app, simple easy to automate and is frequently updated.
    Highly recommended, thanks op.

  • As the above comment great programme and keeps improving with every update great find op A1 cheers

Okay app, I guess. I find Pocket Casts to be way better though, and its UI is gawwwwwwwwwwwwjusssss

  • Only just got into podcasts and find i use them regularly. Using Beyondpod atm. I want to try Pocket Casts since quite a few people use it, but there is no free version?.
Any advantages to buying the unlock key (aside from supporting the dev) ?

    • not that I'm supporting piracy of the app (especially this one since I love it plus the devs of it so much) or any app other thank maybe those georestricted ass-hats.
I'd guess the sync service wouldn't work but also the whole backend is done through Pocketcasts servers
whenever you reload to check for new podcasts instead of going to each podcasts rss feed it goes to PC's server to check so it's a lot speedier. yeah I wish they'd put out a trial version too I was a little hesitent to purchase it as compared to others it is quite expensive but they are running servers for their app so I guess I can understand but I'm also glad I bought this one as I truly think it's the best of the bunch. when I first go my tablet I took a look at them all and and the Ui on PC was leaps and bounds ahead of others. I eventually read a good handfull of reviews and the quicker podcast update feature I thought was cool sold it to me.
