Avanti Discovery 2.0 2012 Hybrid Bicycle $199.95

100

Firstly, I don't know anything about bicycles. So I don't know if this is a good deal or not. The Avanti Discovery 2.0 2012 is $199.95 at 3 stores in Melbourne. The cheapest in Sydney is $249.95 at Narrabeen. Original price is supposedly $549.

I don't know anything about bicycles.

So why post it? This should be moved to the forums, perhaps?

The bike linked is a 3-speed, which is OK if you never have any hills or headwinds, and never want to ride fast.
    e.g. Good for Copenhagen.

    Original price is supposedly $549.

    Bovine excrement.

Personally, I think suspension forks on a 3-speed is a silly gimmick. Maybe useful on cobblestones?

  • Good find but wondering why in SA it is $349.

  • These are great bikes. I bought one for the wife from the Collingwood location a couple of years ago. I think it was around $600/$700 (this model maybe?). I'm now riding it every day. Mine came with a bag holder plus 2 bags that quickly connects to the bike.

    • That has a Nexus 8-speed hub. Much better, but of course double the price.

    1. Suspension seat-posts are nice and soft for about 6 months. Then they wear out and become incredibly painful.
    2. Cheap suspension forks do almost nothing to smoothen out the ride, they just don't have the dampening so they keep bouncing and the extra weight makes the bike hard work
    3. Coaster brakes suck, you are continually applying the brake by accident while coasting, so you have to pedal again to maintain your speed.
    4. Adjustable stems are like the seatpost, but worse. You adjust them once, then curse them when wear causes them to flop side-to-side.
    5. "Front Derailleur: Shimano TX51 Rear Derailleur: Shimano Altus" Umm, who wrote these specs. This bike has neither front nor rear derailleurs.
    6. That chain is not "fully-enclosed" it is Semi-enclosed. Hence why you can see chain in the photo.

It's probably about the best bike you will find for $200, but it's by no means a good bike.

yeah for those in the market for a hybrid, you're much better off going for something secondhand - you can actually get some decent bikes in this price range (sure - we're not talking carbon fibre bikes here, but certainly nothing to scoff at. For example, I've seen several Giant road/hybrid bikes going for around $250). Even if you need to touch up the occasional bit of wear, it's a far better option…

+1 if you come in for natman's avatar.

Pretty poor quality bike. You'll ride it for 3 or 4 months and then it will be left in the shed to rot away. Best to buy a reputable second hand bike. Bikes like Giant etc…..

Avanti is a reputable brand in the Aus / NZ market, they have been around for decades. And Giant will sell you an equally cheap low quality piece of crap if you want them to.

  • I saw some used bikes for 250+ Whats the consensus - buy this for 199+shipping as a started city bike ?
