iMAC with external USB3.0/Thunderbolt SSD as boot up drive ?

I have a 2013 27" iMAC. I am planning to install windows 8 with SSD. I am not sure if installing internal SDD could void its warranty ? or even a internal SSD could be installed in the new MAC. So do you guys think an external SSD with USB3.0 or thunderbolt interface would be comparable to internal SSD ?

  • Also what do you guys think of WD My Book VelociRaptor Duo 2TB External Dual Hard Drive Storage RAID Thunderbolt

I have a 2011 27" mac with internal SSD and external Thunderbolt Drobo. It is an amazing setup. If you install an internal SSD yourself then you will void the warranty.

Take a look here for a comparison -http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cW8Czra3SBA show the external thunderbolt SSD is 3.2 x faster.

What internal drive do you have now?

With regard to the WD drive -http://www.macworld.com.au/reviews/wd-my-book-velociraptor-duo-86228/#.UiuxY7zHH6s, it gets a good review but is expensive for what you get.

CHeck this out on the Drobo 5Dhttp://www.macobserver.com/tmo/review/drobo-5d-review-fast-expandable-thunderbolt-storage, not quite as fast as the WD, but much more expandable and not that much more expensive.

  • FWIW, installing an SSD/upgrading the RAM does not void the warranty on a MBP (not sure about iMAC). It does void the warranty on the specific replaced parts though. Eg. if I swap the HDD with an SSD, the Apple warranty for the HDD/SSD gets voided.

    • On an iMac Ram is OK you can access the memory slots through a panel on the bottom (at least on my model you can not sure about the 2013 model) upgrading drives involves removing the LCD screen and panel to access the internals, according to the technician I had in last week to replace the motherboard, definitely a warranty breaker.
