best places to shop for a gas stove/oven (plus what to look for?)

Hello all,

So, I need to buy a new oven for the place we just bought. It has an electric oven and stove, but electric stoves just don't do it for me.

I've never bought an oven before, and have no idea what's the best place to look. or even what to look for (beyond making sure the new oven is the right basic size for the space the old one will leave)

Guess I'll do bing lee, goodguys, applainces online. Is there anywhere else that I'm missing?

Also, has anyone here gone through the whole gas oven install thing recently and want to drop any hard won pearls of wisdom?

thanks!

Got a pic? Is it a freestanding unit or a separate oven and separate stove? They usually are standard sized.
Can also try seconds world, harvey norman etc. Depending on your budget maybe even euappliances.com.

    Consider induction too?

  • I was planning on gas as we're used to it, and our first month electricity bill was damn high. My understanding is that joule for joule into cooking food, gas is cheaper to run, so hoping a gas oven and stove means a net reduction in energy cost.

All in one stove plus oven. Floor standing. Current space is 560mm wide, but could go to 700 by taking out a vertical chopping board and tray space in the cabinet next to it…

House already has gas, but only a flued room heater (needs repair) connected to it. Working out whether to go reverse cycle aircon for a few rooms or ducted under floor gas for next winter.

Can't really help with brands or where to buy, but I can strongly recommend that you DON'T get an Ilve.

We've had one for some years and the oven has never ever worked properly. I've had techs out to fix it and it still just doesn't heat up to the set temperature. It needs a new thermostat, but as that costs the same as a whole new stove/oven combo, that's not going to happen.

Good luck with choosing your new stove/oven!

  • Wow. Thought they were meant to be good. So the moral of the story is to scream my head off if there's anything sub standard about the oven when installed, or I'll be stuck with it, then repairs later will cost as much as the oven did….

I just went a gas cook top and electric oven, but if you have freestanding I'm not sure if you have much choice. I ended up grabbing mine from seconds world grabbing damaged carton stock. They aren't as cheap as they look if you shop around though.
