    Download hijackthis:

    http://sourceforge.net/projects/hjt/

It will show you all the processes you have running and will help you delete the ones that are causing you grief.

    • ^^This!

Better than any anti-virus when used correctly

What browser do you use? Check and remove useless add ons/things you didn't install.
I would look at what programs you are running.
Run your anti virus on full and a few other programs(Malwarebytes comes to mind).

  • using firefox, have norton 360 - doesnt seem to do anything..

    • Hmm alright have a look at the add ons on firefox. Might be a good idea to look at your hosts file also.
Also run the hijackthis above, you can post the log here if you would like and we can have a look.

    • Some anti-viruses won't find malware if you just do a "quick" scan, try doing a full scan instead.

  • A lot of ads are the result of targeted advertising due to pre-visited sites…. ;)

        ^^Also this!

A work mate told me once her sons bin was always full of tissues… this was a completely irelevant tangent to the conversation about her laptop doing the same thing as OP described.. i said bring the laptop in and presto…. pr0n!!!

Note that OzBargain uses Google AdSense. Adult sites are banned to place banners on AdSense, and we also explicitly banned all gambling sites (+ a few other sensitive categories). As far as I know, they don't do pop-up ads as well.

Looks like there are some malware on your computer that generates all these.

    • Malware, I got 2 customer came back with the same problem.

      Try Kaspersky internet security.

    Run a Malwarebytes scan.

  • I pretty much eliminate all adverts & tracking in Firefox (including all on OZB), using Ghostery, and ""NOT"" installing Flash. An ad-blocker works also but I don't need it with the above 2 programs running.
Basically being preemptive, blocking all unwanted, offensive content makes internet enjoyble again I find.

As most internet advertising seems to be flash based -
I want to add, to block flash adverts and other content automatically, you can install a flash blocker into your browser. I just don't install java, flash, spyware apps etc in the first place. Same result.

  • Not meaning to go off topic, but just following some of this advice I looked up my revouninstall and see lots of 'sonic' updates - what is that - I have an old Dell. Cheers

  • As well as some of the above I am running (updated) SuperAntiSpyware (with Real - Time protection on) and Avast scans daily, and using popup blocker in Firefox. Comodo firewall is always on at 'safe' level. Never have an issue … that I know of …

  • Malwarebytes is the best program, download and make sure you update it regularly if you have a free version. There are many free forums that will give personalised assistance, for example Spybot has a forum with volunteer (free) helpers that will walk you through the steps to remove the malware. (Google it) Remember to make a small donation if they help.

  • Hijack this is all you need just let it do its thing and it will reset your browser. Most antiviruses wont pick up a hijack
