Building a forum website - Cost? Tips? Tools? DIY?

Hi all,

Appreciate some guidance here. Looking to build a basic forum website for a Uni project/Self interest. Having ozbargain as an excellent example, does anyone have any recommendations on:

  1. General cost of build (not on-going maintenance)?
  2. Recommended supplier? Or DIY?
  3. Any helpful links/tools I can use to start?

I am relatively well versed with IT, however have only coded basic HTML/VB/SQL for a couple of uni subjects. It won't have any payment system to start off with, but I would be interested in approx cost for that too. I'll add in more detail as I get questions

    Joomla or drupal seem to be the standards. Look out for good spam protection plug-ins.

    you can start with phpbb if you want free forum script.

    once you start generating some revenue you can switch to vbulletin. its the best paid forum script out there.

    both are pretty easy to setup.

    +1 Phpbb is free and fairly easy to set up.

    You can build it yourself using cms as mentioned above . Else if you need professional help you may be spending around 4000$.

    Free mate…search free hosting, free domain and install PhpBB, SMF or any otherfree forum template
