I have LycaMobile and am looking at buying a smart phone to get Internet. Should I change to other carrier?

I have prepaid with Lycamobile and find them a bit hit and miss. I recharge about $20 with $2 extra free about every three weeks so I guess I use about $30 a month. At the moment I do not have a phone that is touch screen and so I do not use internet. I am looking at getting a new phone possibly a Huawei nothing to fancy or pricey, my question is who would you recommend as my carrier? should I change? I only ring Australian mobile number and family has Telstra and Optus. thanks

  • you can get Xperia SP with $30 plan from Virgin with $0 repayment. and you get Sony Speaker Ball bonus
    http://www.virginmobile.com.au/Shop/ProductDetails/12768/Son…

2nd option you can get an OUTRIGHT phone $372 delivered from Kogan, http://www.kogan.com/au/buy/lg-optimus-g-e975-4g-32gb-black/
I myself is interested in this phone, waiting for the free shipping offer :)
Some other seller sells different version of this phone that comes with 8MP camera quality
Then you can sign up with Vaya which costs $18/month or Amaysim with this option. (not sure about their quality though)

This 2nd option will costs you $33.5/month over 24 months and you get new phone, Quadcore and 13MP camera, if you thinking of getting Huawei, I assume, you don't mind LG. Some OZBers dislike LG due to their firmware update support is slow.

Or just get the Nexus 4, Outright for $299 as you can see in Popular Deal section. again, It's LG made.
personally I prefer the LG Optimus e975 from Kogan than Nexus 4.

  • Don't forget the Nokia Lumia 720 or the HTC 8x 4G LTE is currently on the Ozbargain front page.

You can buy it from here for only $219 / $229 respectively. They're neither pricey but they're also not cheaply built — the Nokia also features free offline GPS mapping and turn-by-turn navigation, while the HTC has 4G LTE support (if you want to go with a 4G network such as Vaya, get the HTC).

If you prefer Android, the 8g / 16g Nexus 4 is your best bet for a budget price, although it has no 4G support and no SD card slot, and the camera isn't all that great either.

Under the $200 mark, you may consider a Huawei G300+ ($100 dollars), Huawei G501 ($150, unlock via Bagman for $5.49) or the Nokia 520 from Harvey Norman ($169).

Don't get the Virgin $30 contracts — 200MB of data is very easy to burn through. You'll get better value buying a similar phone outright and getting a post paid SIM.

  • thanks I am not really wanting a contract have watched friends and seen a contract as lots of hassel. I would rather pre-paid then I can change my mind if I need to. My son has just been given a iphone 5 with work, but so he has a very used iphone 4 that I may end up using that for a while. So really I wonder what is the best pre-paid value with internet? thanks
