Cairns To Airlie Beach Cheap Travel

Hi :-)
I'm planning to travel from Cairns to Airlie Beach around the 25th of November.
What is a cheap way to do this, and which mode of transport, preferably under $100?
Thanks.

  • Rail to Proserpine and then bus to Airlie

  • Thanks.
I got one quote so far online from Premier Motor Service - bus including washroom/toilet on the bus, uni student price of $81 from Cairns to Airlie Beach.
    The search continues…

    • That's pretty good considering it is more than 600km.

    • For few dollars more, try the greyhound bus. More options with times and better service.

You could try getting a rental car/van relocation deal. If a rental company needs a car returned to Airlie Beach from Cairns they will often rent you the car for free and pay for your fuel to drive it for them. They don't usually appear this far in advance but try www.transfercar.com.au for a start. A google search will find other companies who do it too.

  • If you are really short of cash either go to the truckie depots to ask, or hold up a large cardboard sign saying PROSERPINE or AIRLIE BEACH whilst standing on the main highway, near a suitable place for such a vehicle to stop too. Proserpine is on the main drag whilst you would actually need to detour off the main drag for Airlie. I am sure someone would stop for you, if you look clean, civilised and possess good manners. Offering a few dollars to a truckie or some (touristy) travellers may help sweeten the deal too. When I lived in FNQ you would often see backpackers holding up these signs, and they usually got lucky.

don't forget to put the OzBargain logo on your sign.

While you are thinking about the idea of hitchhikng, have a read at this

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivan_Milat_%28serial_killer%29

    • Wolf Creek is an excellent documentary about hitchhiking in outback QLD/NT too. ;)

    • Fortunately Milat is safely locked away now.
Of course I would not suggest females hitch-hike still, but truckies are usually the best and safest to travel with.

Backpackers often meet others on their journeys so have someone to travel with too.

      • or Dogs, like the Littlest Hobo.

There's a place that keeps on calling me.
down the road that's where i'll always be.
Ever stop I make, I make a new friend.
Can't stop for long and then I'm gone again.
Maybe tomorrow I'll want to settle down.
Until tomorrow I'll just keep moving on.
So if you want to join me for a while.
just pack your backs and we'll go in style.

        • Littlest Hobo was my favourite childhood show way back when. Mr Ed, Flipper and Skippy days; life certainly appeared much safer then.
